Losing Egypt?

EMP proof is too limited. Why not go for "far distributed"? You could have 6 highly EMP proofed facilities, but then a single political takeover and they all get shut down anyway. We need ways to communicate that don't depend on central command and control. Maybe not primary communication, but back up. Hell we could do with motorola 10 mile walkie talkies, a few HAM radios and planning if we thought ahead. That does not solve the economic impact of loss of internet/phone but still.

You forgot your sarcasm tag.

Think of the children!

The United States will review its "assistance posture" to Egypt based on events that take place in the coming days, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Friday.

Whew! That was a close one, glad we got this thing under control.

A+ observation, Casino67!

Obama says he told Mubarak to reform Egypt's government

Not exactly a "Mr Gorbachev tear down this wall" moment.

Saltbag!

"I love Obama's sage advice on how to listen to a country's people,"

For a new comer you need to understand that on this Forum we like to treat our President with a little more respect than that.

We don't refer to him by just his last name.

We add 'Bozo' in front of it.

So that should really be

I love Bozo Obama's sage advice on how to listen to a country's people,

I love Obama's sage advice on how to listen to a country's people, and his hopes they "do the right thing." I'd love to see Obama put in the leadership postion of Egypt, let alone actually understanding his own advice (as he proclaims it) and actually applying it to his own Czardom of the USA. His speech was like a parent talking to their kids. Completely obtuse on global understanding.

The people who Obama is supporting may will be our future enemy.

The ironic thing is they will be using our military equipment.

Absolutely. They could be our future enemy, but then who can we absolutely exclude from that status in that region when things get dire. In this regard, I think Obama is much further out of his league than his "political" idiom can handle.

If you were president, what would you do?

If I were president what would I do you ask? Well the 1st thing I'd do is call a high level meeting of my cabinet...

To discuss that matter.

BTW you are to be congratulated on your very fine question. If only more people would have the intelligence to ask 'What would Valin do?"

Democracy in the Middle East(with the exception of Turkey and Israel)is not possible. The Middle East does not have the history of "democracy".

Tell that to the Iraqis.

The last time I checked, the Iraqis have not formed a government yet.

Last month. The interesting thing about this (for me) is even though it took them 9 months to do it, the battle was played out without violence/bloodshed/murder. They fought it out politically.

DREAMS meets REALITY

The Augustana Band Bound for Egypt in January 2011

Wednesday, June 30, 2010

Augustana College, SD

"Members of the Augustana Band will be immersed in the Egyptian culture for approximately three weeks"

Augustana College band plays on amid turmoil in Egypt

12:10 AM, Jan. 28, 2011

Then, 12 hours later

Augustana Band concert in Egypt canceled

"Amid intensifying anti-government protests in Cairo, Egypt, the Augustana Band has canceled their scheduled concert there this evening. The concert was to be held at Mubarak Hall near the Cairo International Airport."

You have to laugh, but this will be an experience these kids will never forget, to say the least. Can they call, e-mail, twitter, whatever, their parents in Sioux Falls with the internet shut down in Egypt? I would not want to be the mother of one of these band members. :o

Nickydog! You'd be on pins and needles waiting for these kids to get back home safely.

I heard on the news, I think yesterday, that no flights were going in or out of Cairo.

Well, you have great resources, know the middle east inside and out have a fully developed understanding of Islam and are very circumspect about adding your own opinion about solutions. But I KNOW you have them. And that really makes me curious! :P

But I have to say, this solution came as a bit of a surprise. I think it might work!

Muslim Brotherhood: Arabs will topple leaders allied with the United States...

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) - The leader of Jordan's powerful Muslim Brotherhood warned Saturday that unrest in Egypt will spread across the Mideast and Arabs will topple leaders allied with the United States.

Hammam Saeed's comments were made at a protest outside the Egyptian Embassy in Amman, inspired by massive rallies in neighboring Egypt demanding the downfall of the country's longtime president, Hosni Mubarak.

About 100 members of the fundamentalist group and activists from other leftist organizations and trade unions chanted "Mubarak, step down" and "the decision is made, the people's revolt will remain.snip

Actually I really don't know what will happen, I know what I would like to see happen, Egypt become a real western style democracy, but no one can say how this will turn out.

That said I have no doubt the MB is as we speak trying to take over this revolution, much the way the Khomeinists took over the 79 revolt in Iran. The question is are the pro democracy forces strong enough to withstand the assault by the MB? There is cause for hope see Egypt protests: America's secret backing for rebel leaders behind uprising

Al Jazeera: US to reconsider aid to Egypt

White House officials are evaluating the annual package given to the embattled Egyptian government.

In the aftermath of Egypt’s crackdown on protesters on Friday, Washington has announced it is reviewing its aid package to the country.

Egypt has received $28bn in assistance since 1975, according to the US Agency for International Development. While USAID's website says the funds have gone to programs devoted to health, trade and education – among other things – most US aid goes to Egypt's military.

Egypt receives close to $2bn in economic and military aid every year, making it the second largest recipient of US foreign assistance after Israel. Of that, $1.3bn is devoted to military assistance, according to the Congressional Research Service, the public policy arm of the US congress.
