Marines: Most Female Recruits Don't Meet New Pullup Standard

Tom Bowman

December 27, 2013

Starting Jan. 1, every woman in the Marines Corps was supposed to meet a new physical standard by performing three pullups. But that has been put off......

Lance Cpl. Ally Beiswanger explained that the pullup test had been put off until sometime next year, to gather more data and "ensure all female Marines are given the best opportunity to succeed.".....

Marine officers would not talk to NPR on tape. They said they delayed the pullup requirement to avoid losing not only recruits but also current female Marines who can't pass the test.....

My 8-yr. old grandsons were fascinated with this. They like to invent "contraptions" with their Legos and had fun analyzing how this was made. They also found him to be very "creepy." Me. too.

Sweet @nickydog!

It looked like something Da Vinci would have drawn.....and it reminded me of the villain, Dr. Arlis Lovelace [Kenneth Branagh] and his fantastic "machines" in the Will Smith movie, Wild, Wild West.

Also art is supposed to provoke a reaction......and it resembles a style that might be called "Steam-Punk."

The Case for Female SEALs

Why the military is going about integrating the sexes all wrong: Women need to be in elite positions on special forces teams before they'll be accepted among the grunts of the infantry.

Elliot Ackerman

Dec 24 2013

Last month, three women became the first of their sex to graduate from the Marine Corps famously grueling Advanced Infantry Training Course. The Marine Corps was asking a simple question by running small groups through these courses in experimental test batches, two to five women at a time: Can the female body withstand the rigors of infantry training? The answer, these women showed, is that it can.

So far much of the debate surrounding integration has focused on the physical capabilities of women, as if this were the singular issue. Admittedly the strain of infantry training, or even combat, is relatively easier for a 6-foot tall, 180-pound man, but there are women fit enough to survive these punishing courses. As for combat, well, if weve proved anything over the last decade of war, its that women can sustain its rigors.

So if the barrier to integrating women into the infantry isnt a physical one then what is it?

The Year in Pictures: Auld Lang Syne Edition
Steven Hayward

Too hard to make a complete review and selection of the very best from our Week in Review galleries, but heres a few new ones, and a few old ones, plus, of course, a brand new guns and gams weapons display for the close, because you just cant have enough new ones of those. (Though maybe I should run the whole galley and put them to a reader vote? The first annual Miss Power Line contest? Ill have to check with our pageant desk.) Happy new year everybody.

A sad commentary on their view of their own constituants...

"The soft bigotry of low expectations."

Opps, I forgot that minorities can not be bigots.

National Review Online

The lower-than-hoped-for enrollment numbers on the federal exchanges are due to Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D., D.C.) argued on Monday. Norton blamed a “negative propaganda campaign” by Republicans that confused Americans into thinking that the law was no longer in effect.

“There are millions of people out there who think it was repealed, so there was no way to break through that very easily,” she told MSNBC. Norton also pointed out that the “debacle of a website” made matters worse because it “seemed to confirm that [the law] must have been repealed, or should have been repealed.”

Norton remained confident that the enrollment numbers will improve as people learn more about the law as well as the nearing deadlines and fines. “When that fine is going to kick in, you’re going to see people trotting to sign on like you’ve never seen it before,” she said.

Dean: Individual Mandate ‘Not Necessary’

“The individual mandate was not necessary and it’s probably a big political thing, and that is going to hurt the Democrats because people don’t like to be told what to do by the government no matter what party they’re in,” the former Democratic National Committee chairman said on Monday.
