Mobster uses mass-mailed letters from Obama, other politicians in bid for leniency

MITCHEL MADDUX and PEDRO OLIVEIRA JR.

December 8, 2012

This mobster is the scam artist-in-chief.

A longtime Gambino crime-family associate tried to convince a judge he’s politically connected to avoid a harsh sentence — claiming a mass-mailing from President Obama proves he has pals in the Oval Office.

Anthony “Tony O” O’Donnell is awaiting sentencing on Dec. 18 on federal charges of shaking down owners of Sitt Asset Management, a Manhattan real-estate investment firm.

His lawyer yesterday filed 17 pages of cookie-cutter thank-you letters from politicians as part of the mobster’s sentencing memorandum, which usually includes notes from well-meaning acquaintances.

Sorry Tony, mass mailings don't count...but hey it was worth a shot! laugh.png

Ladies and gentlemen: may I introduce his Indifferency President Barack Obama!

(Snip)

Breaking with the longstanding practice of recent First Families, the Obamas do not actually greet their guests at every party. The press and members of Congress are among those who get a photo op; most others do not.

And this is a problem.

This president is not a misanthrope, exactly. But neither is he what we used to call in the 70s "a people person." He has all the friends he thinks he'll ever need, is not interested in making new ones, has limited time for the grip and grin that is the lifeblood of retail politics, and is almost certainly the most introverted president of modern times.

(Snip)

What he likes is to stand behind a podium in rolled up shirt sleeves looking like he is ready to go to work, look cool, wave at the adoring crowd, and blame whatever group is his latest target.

@nickydog -- you described him perfectly, don't forget sticking his nose in the air and looking down on everyone

Why are you always criticizing that nice man who is only doing what he thinks is best for the nation?

I have actually had Obama supporters say this to me.

The "do as I say, but not to me" is amazing:

New York Times Editors: Wait, Save the State-Tax Deduction!

Jim Geraghty

Scissors-32x32.png

Last week we talked about the “Blue State Tax Hikes,” which would be limiting or eliminating deductions for state and local taxes and the deduction on mortgage interest. Of course, those tax changes would go into effect nationwide, but taxpayers in the blue states would see the biggest increases in their tax bills.

Friday morning, the editors of the New York Times suddenly realized their readership would be hit the hardest under these proposals:

In their fiscal-cliff offer, Republicans have proposed raising $800 billion by capping deductions for the wealthy, though their proposal would inevitably affect the middle class in expensive states like New York and California.

Many Rich University Presidents Don’t Pay Taxes

by Nathan Harden - Fix Editor on December 10, 2012

Scissors-32x32.png

While many wealthy university presidents favor high taxes, many of them don’t pay taxes on their own income. According to the Chronicle for Higher Education, half of the nation’s 50 highest-paid college presidents had their taxes paid for them by the universities they lead.

As a group, university presidents are are generally outspoken advocates of tax-and-spend, big-government liberalism. That’s not surprising in light of the liberal bent of academia, as well as the fact that most large universities survive on tens or even hundreds of millions of government grants and federal aid dollars.

They want you to pay high taxes so that the government can pass the money to their institutions. But they don’t pay taxes out of their own pockets, despite their huge salaries.

Google Revenues Sheltered in No-Tax Bermuda Soar to $10 Billion

The increase in Google’s revenues routed to Bermuda, disclosed in a Nov. 21 filing by a subsidiary, could fuel the outrage over corporate tax dodging.

Google Inc. (GOOG) avoided about $2 billion in worldwide income taxes in 2011 by shifting $9.8 billion in revenues into a Bermuda shell company, almost double the total from three years before, filings show.

By legally funneling profits from overseas subsidiaries into Bermuda, which doesn’t have a corporate income tax, Google cut its overall tax rate almost in half. The amount moved to Bermuda is equivalent to about 80 percent of Google’s total pretax profit in 2011.

Well, that last item would be understandable, except....

Fascinating new WHI/RI

Thanks, @Rheo! Always interesting & scary........2014 indeed!

Common Cause is one I had not heard of before. All the same players and causes.

In 1972, Common Cause sued President Richard Nixon's re-election campaign, the Committee to Re-Elect the President (CREEP), under the Federal Corrupt Practices Act for failure to report campaign contributions. This high-profile case forced Nixon to expose his secret list of donors and aided in his ultimate downfall two years later.[20]

In January 2011, Common Cause filed a petition with the Justice Department, seeking an investigation about whether United States Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas should have recused themselves from the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission case.[21] Common Cause then investigated the financial filings of Thomas, saying that Thomas did not include his wife's income in his filings.[22] Bob Edgar, Common Cause president, called Thomas' explanation of his omissions "implausible."

Controversy

In 2011, the group hosted a rally near the site of a meeting of wealthy conservative activists organized by the Koch family. Christian Hartsock, a videographer who contributes to Andrew Breitbart's BigGovernment.com, interviewed several attendees who made racist remarks about Thomas, such as suggesting he should be lynched and that he should be put back in the fields. Another person suggested that Fox News CEO Roger Ailes should be killed. Common Cause quickly condemned such rhetoric.[23][24]

Common Cause’s is most notable for its activism for campaign finance reform. In 1974 Common Cause led the effort to pass the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA), creating the current system of public financing in presidential campaigns.[14] (Reform my arse, they wrote it to suit their cause says, Rheo)

At the state level, Common Cause has led successful efforts to pass campaign finance reforms, including the first disclosure laws, contribution limits and public financing in states such as Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Jersey, Michigan, Kentucky, Connecticut, and Florida.[citation needed]

Common Cause is currently working on legislation for voluntary public financing in Maryland, New Mexico, and other states.[citation needed]

I recommend reading Katharine Graham's Personal History. She told a simple and credible story: that Johnson was not persuaded to accept the offer of VP and Katharine's husband Phil thought that he was really wanted, so he went out of his way to encourage Johnson to accept. Later, she said, Bobby was exasperated to Phil that Johnson wasn't supposed to accept.

The insider story that does support cloak and daggerishness was that Johnson as President tried to record Bobby Kennedy. The story is that someone had some kind of device in his pocket to scramble the recordings.

That does sound good, @saveliberty.

The other good biography is Richard Reeves, President Kennedy: Profile of Power

Reeves found that when President Kennedy was preparing to meet with Khruschev, WH staff was giving the President any and all information about Khruschev the man.

But on the first day that they met, Kennedy was flabbergasted and unprepared for arguments for communism. This, from someone with a degree from the London School of Economics.

Kennedy recovered the talks on the second day, but he made a mission to get a military win over communism.

Which gets us to the Bay of Pigs. Staff assumed that Kennedy would expand the military involvement in an escalation, and this proved to be false. Which led to the US embarrassment, but arguably an angle for someone to be involved in an assassination attempt in retaliation

I am reminded that President Truman had a difficult time holding the coalition together in the Democratic Party. If I recall correctly, when he left office, that was the last of the moderate Democrats.

Johnson knew how to wheel and deal and he liked it.

Add that the story was that a woman reporter went to his ranch to interview him and he decided that it was okay to force his attentions on her.

Instability in Egypt, where a newly-elected Islamic government teeters over an angry population, isn't enough to stop the U.S. from sending more than 20 F-16 fighter jets, as part of a $1 billion foreign aid package.

The first four jets are to be delivered to Egypt beginning Jan. 22, a source at the naval air base in Fort Worth, where the planes have been undergoing testing, told FoxNews.com. The North African nation already has a fleet of more than 200 of the planes and the latest shipment merely fulfills an order placed two years ago. But given the uncertainty in Cairo, some critics wonder if it is wise to be sending more top gun planes.

Hope they have the auto-disable system installed...

Obama's way around the Debt Ceiling:

Zimbabwe Ben, meet Zimbabwe Timmy

http://www.wcvarones...abwe-timmy.html

800px-Zimbabwe_%24100_trillion_2009_Obverse.jpg

Thanks to an odd loophole in current law, the U.S. Treasury is technically allowed to mint as many coins made of platinum as it wants and can assign them whatever value it pleases.

Under this scenario, the U.S. Mint would produce (say) a pair of trillion-dollar platinum coins. The president orders the coins to be deposited at the Federal Reserve. The Fed then moves this money into Treasury’s accounts. And just like that, Treasury suddenly has an extra $2 trillion to pay off its obligations for the next two years — without needing to issue new debt. The ceiling is no longer an issue.

Yeah, the ceiling is no longer an issue. The fact that the U.S. is still running trillion-dollar deficits and printing money out of thin air to fund them? Kinda still an issue.

Congress created this monster in 1996 with the following: (k) The Secretary may mint and issue platinum bullion coins and proof platinum coins in accordance with such specifications, designs, varieties, quantities, denominations, and inscriptions as the Secretary, in the Secretary’s discretion, may prescribe from time to time.
