Nelson Mandela ceremony interpreter branded 'fake'

The sign language interpreter used at Tuesday's memorial service for Nelson Mandela, and whose image was broadcast around the world as he shared a stage with world leaders including President Obama, was being called a "fake" by the Deaf Federation of South Africa.

Bruno Druchen, the national director of the federation, sent this tweet as the ceremony was taking place at the FNB Stadium on the outskirts of Johannesburg:

The Associated Press also reported the allegation Wednesday, saying that three sign language experts who watched the broadcast said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages.

"It was horrible, an absolute circus, really really bad," Nicole Du Toit, an official sign language interpreter, told the AP. "Only he can understand those gestures."

The Darkside of the Net.

The revenge porn avengers

James Fletcher BBC World Service, Nederland, Texas

What would you do if you found out that someone had posted naked pictures of you online, without your permission? It's known as "revenge porn", and in the age of mobile phone cameras and sexting, more and more people are becoming victims. Some are fighting back.

Two Brothers from Different Mothers

One more thing that these fakes have in common.

There were complaints last year after Jantjie interpreted the proceedings at the ruling African National Conference elective conference, the institute's chairman Johan Blaauw told the South African Press Association.

"If I was not interpreting right, why was it was not picked up at that time?" Jantjie said. "You must remember, you are talking about an interpreter who has been interpreting through these years. And if I was interpreting wrong through these years, why should it become an issue now? It's one of the questions I've never ever gotten an answer for."

The radio station interviewer asked Jantjie to comment on media reports that he was hearing voices in his head and hallucinating during the Mandela event Tuesday.

Pressed twice, Jantjie reluctantly acknowledged that he was a "patient receiving a treatment in schizophrenia."

Interesting government jobs in South Africa -- "deputy minister of women, children, and people with disabilities" (also interesting bundling of certain groups in that one), and "minister for performance monitoring and evaluation in the presidency." blink.png I suppose if we looked at the titles of all of Obama's czars we would see some equally interesting titles.

"deputy minister of women, children, and people with disabilities"

@nickydog

Thanks for catching that one... I missed the nuance of this bundling.

BTW... I'm sorry to learn about your handicap disability.

Just a note to say how much I hate non-union companies.

Yesterday I ordered a few thinks from Walmart online. Without paying anything extra for delivery, the items arrived on my deck today. (via Fedex)

Wonder how much quicker they would have arrived if Walmart was a union shop?

Ted Cruz coloring book selling fast
12/12/13

AUSTIN, Texas — He's known for coloring outside the lines in the staid U.S. Senate. Now children large and small can color in U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz.

Just in time for the holidays, St. Louis publisher Really Big Coloring Books Inc. is offering a coloring and activity book featuring the Texas tea party darling.

Company founder Wayne Bell said Thursday the book is already in its third printing after just six days. The first run of around 10,000 sold out in barely 24 hours, and the second went nearly as fast.
