GOP debate crunchtime: 'The time for lowering expectations is over'

2575067Washington Examiner:

BOULDER, Colo. — Amid raised stakes and dwindling opportunities to break through, the Republican presidential contenders on Wednesday were set to meet for their third televised debate.

The CNBC cablecast is the first to focus exclusively on pocketbook issues, the voters' No. 1 priority, further increasing the pressure with less than 100 days to go until the first GOP votes are cast in Iowa. With a crowded, prime time debate stage threatening to limit airtime, the Republicans have little room for error, their delicate task being one of projecting empathy with an economically insecure electorate while also offering concrete solutions.

"They won't believe you have a plan if they don't believe you care," Republican pollster Frank Luntz told the Washington Examiner.Scissors-32x32.png

A 'Fed Up' Kasich Expected to Take Direct Swings at Opponents at Tonight's Debate

Ohio Governor John Kasich is 'fed up' with his Republican opponents' nonsense, he declared Tuesday.

"I've about had it with these people," he said.

Without specifically naming names, Kasich called a number of his opponents' policy proposals 'crazy.'

"We got one candidate that says we ought to abolish Medicaid and Medicare," Kasich said. "You ever heard of anything so crazy as that?"

Carson.

We got one guy," Kasich said, "who says we ought to take 10 or 11 million people ... we're gonna pick them up and we're gonna take them to the border and scream at them to get out of our country? That's just crazy."

Trump.

The governor said they need to 'grow up' and offer real solutions.

Expect Kasich to bring this new, combative tone to the debate stage tonight in Boulder, Colorado. In the past two debates, the other guys (and gal) seemed to keep their Trump criticism to a minimum. It will be interesting to see if Kasich changes the dynamic with a more aggressive approach.Scissors-32x32.png

Five things to watch in tonight’s Republican tilt

BOULDER, Colo. — Republican candidates for the White House will face off for the third time in a debate broadcast by CNBC on Wednesday night.

The battle hosted in the Coors Events Center at the University of Colorado Boulder will focus on the economy.

Here’s a look at five things to watch:

1. Trump vs. Carson

The most striking storyline heading into the debate revolves around Donald Trump and Ben Carson, the front-runners for the GOP nomination.

Trump’s integral sell — that he’s a winner — is under threat from Carson, who has surpassed the business mogul in several polls. Carson also topped Trump in a national poll released Tuesday by CBS News and The New York Times.

Carson said Sunday that he won’t “get into the mud pit” when engaging the real estate tycoon but is sure to face a barrage of attacks from Trump as the pair stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the middle of the stage.

Trump has also injected religion into the GOP race over the weekend, questioning Carsons Seventh-day Adventist faith. The retired neurosurgeon has so far brushed off the attack.

2. Will Carson get specific?

GOP strategists say Carson may need to offer more policy specifics, given his recent struggle to explain issues such as raising the debt limit.

His soft-spoken and conversational approach has been a hit with voters — his favorability ratings are through the roof.Scissors-32x32.png

Seems like everyone is determined to be forceful tonight.

I don't know who this Harwood guy is but I read a couple of places today that there is no way in hell he should be a questioner for a Republican debate.

Huckabee is so right about social security and he even left out that the employer has to match what is taken out of your check which makes the theft twice as egregious. But i can see Chrysties point also - what the heck do you do now???

Over the years, the Dems has said that we couldn't let people have their own accounts - the bad bad people in the stock market might steal it all. - well shucks that just because they wanted to steal it all.

Back to the SS question. Would you rather have everything that you have had taken out of your check from the very first day you started working plus the same from your employer in a simple savings account accruing compound interest or what the government is giving you now? I figured it out one time. It's a no brainer.
