Former Maui lawmaker charged with taking more than $18,000 in bribes

A former Senate majority leader in Maui, Hawaii, was charged in federal court on Tuesday with allegedly taking more than $18,000 in bribes, including an agreement to "introduce a bill and also to kill bills in exchange for cash," the Justice Department said.

Jamie Kalani English, 54, began taking bribes from a business owner in 2015, which included several thousand dollars to buy food and drinks for political gatherings, according to documents filed in the U.S. District Court in Honolulu.:snip:

Omar paid thousands by restaurant accused of stealing money intended to feed starving children

Rep. Ilhan Omar and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey are accused of receiving donations from men who stole millions of COVID relief dollars. One of these men also runs a charity founded by a city council member and sits on a city working group.

Rep. Ilhan Omar has partied at and received donations from a business accused by the FBI of stealing millions of COVID relief dollars from children.

Feeding Our Future received $197.9 million in 2021 to provide food to starving Minnesota children impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the FBI recently raided the nonprofit’s headquarters and suggested that little or none of this money was actually spent feeding kids.

Department of Education was battling two nonprofits for years before scandal broke

As early as October 2019 (if not before), MDE was concerned about the rapid growth of the St. Anthony-based Feeding Our Future.

February 14, 2022

(Center of the American Experiment) — The Jan. 20 FBI raids on Feeding Our Future was just the latest escalation in a war between the state agency and two networks of nonprofits operating food giveaways to low-income children. The state Department of Education (MDE) has been battling Feeding Our Future and the related nonprofit Partners in Nutrition (aka Partners in Quality Care) in and out of court going back at least as far as 2017.

MDE oversees locally two federal government free-food programs, the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Those two programs are meant to supplement the better-known school lunch program and provide meals to children at times they are not in class — after school and during summers, respectively.

These nonprofits aren’t charities in the usual sense of the word. They accept little or no donations from private individuals or entities. Both were created in recent years, and by the same people, for the sole purpose of helping other nonprofit and private entities to access these two government food programs. For a 10 percent cut, of course.

And they have been hugely successful. Each nonprofit boasts a network of hundreds of free-food distribution sites — including private schools, churches, childcare centers, apartment complexes, parks, and other locations throughout the state. Collectively, the nonprofits have accessed $460 million in government money over the years. Like a Silicon Valley startup, each year the nonprofits have operated, they have added another zero to their revenue column.

More than $300 million of that total was accessed in just 2021, as the federal government relaxed rules on what types of entities could participate in the programs and what types of locations could host distribution sites.

According to filings in the lawsuit, the rapid growth of the nonprofits can be attributed to signing up new sites to the programs. But the nonprofits also signed up existing sites to their network, competing with other nonprofit groups for market share.

At some later point in 2021, MDE banned distribution sites located at privately-owned restaurants, although restaurants can continue to serve as vendors to approved sites.

The FBI raids occurred on Jan. 20. By the end of the month, both Feeding Our Future and Partners in Nutrition were suspended from the programs. Not one person has been arrested or charged in the alleged scandal.

Although local media have gone silent on the story in recent days, we have not heard the last of Feeding Our Future and Partners in Nutrition.

Chicago alderman found guilty of lying to regulators, filing false income tax returns

Thompson was found guilty of two counts of lying to regulators and five counts of filing false federal income tax returns.

Hannah Nightingale

February 15, 2022

Chicago Alderman Patrick Daley Thompson was found guilty by a jury on two counts of lying to regulators and five counts of filing false income tax returns.

The 11th Ward council member is the grandson of late Mayor Richard J. Daley, and the nephew of former Mayor Richard M. Daley, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The verdict Monday came after around three-and-a-half hours of deliberation by the 12-person jury in the Dirksen Federal Courthouse.

During closing arguments, Assistant US Attorney Brian Netols told jurors "no one is so big, no one is so important, that they can't be held accountable for their criminal conduct."

Bribery case involving ComEd officials moves ahead with shadow over Madigan

(The Center Square) – Former House Speaker Michael Madigan spent more than $2.7 million for legal work in 2021, most of it after he left office, after being implicated but not charged in a federal corruption probe that continues to make waves in Springfield.

After it became clear he didn't have the votes, Madigan withdrew his bid in January 2021 to continue on as speaker of the Illinois House, a position he held for nearly four decades. Shortly after, on Feb. 18, 2021, he resigned from the state legislature. The next day, his campaign fund, Friends of Michael J Madigan, spent $2 million with Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, a Chicago-based law firm with more than 700 attorneys around the globe. Last year, Friends of Michael J Madigan spent 2,771,890.55 with six law firms, according to campaign finance records from Illinois Sunshine.

The clouds around the former speaker have made it difficult to tell what lies ahead for Madigan.

"The smoke obscures your view so there's no real clarity," said David Parker, assistant professor at the Graham School of Management at Saint Xavier University. "There's something there, there's something through the mist, the fog, you just don't really know what it is."

This week, Judge Harry Leinenweber denied a motion to dismiss corruption charges against four people who prosecutors allege gave jobs and contracts as part of an 8-year long effort to influence Madigan on behalf of ComEd, the state's largest electrical utility. The decision is the latest ahead of a possible trial in September.:snip:

Former Democrat House Speaker faces racketeering and bribery charges for decades-long schemes

Michael Madigan is accused of enhancing his own "political power and financial well-being while also generating income for his political allies and associates."

Nick Monroe

March 2, 2022

A lengthy federal investigation into former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has finally led to his indictment on federal racketeering charges on Wednesday.

The 22-count indictment charges both Madigan and another former Illinois politician of taking advantage of their public office.

Madigan was a fixture in Illinois politics for half a century. He had been a member of their state house since 1971 (and speaker for 38 of those years), but controversy caught up with Madigan’s career, including allegations of corruption that were previously described as "lobbying" and "patronage."

Having grown up there, it was common knowledge ( almost a joke) for as long as I could remember. The Daley Machine (father & son) was a common phrase.

Prominent Dem Donor And LGBT Activist Ed Buck Busted For Operating Drug House

Geee,
September 18, 2019

Democratic donor and LGBT activist Ed Buck was arrested on Tuesday after a man overdosed in his California home, ABC 7 news reported. The overdose last week marked the third time a man overdosed in Buck's home. The first two men's overdoses were due to methamphetamine that resulted in death. Both of their deaths took place two years apart.

LGBT activists were upset about the overdoses of 26-year-old Gemmel Moore and 55-year-old Timothy Dean, both black gay men, because they believed Buck was personally responsible for their deaths. Their cases were not prosecuted because of a lack of evidence, the Los Angeles Times reported.

According to prosecutors, Buck injected meth into the third victim. He sustained an overdose but ended up surviving
