The Republican presidential candidates—most of them, anyway—will face of in another debate in Las Vegas on Tuesday. It will be an edifying intellectual experience for all. What can we expect to see? Here’s what:

No one will miss Mike Huckabee, who just got demoted to the kids’ debate. Or maybe he dropped out already. Who the hell knows?

With a relatively strong performance, Jeb Bush will propel himself to the cusp of the VP conversation.

Ben Carson will gaffe by, among other things, mixing up the terms AQAP and ASAP.

John Kasich will continue to not understand why you total f—king morons don’t like him, and may even challenge Donald Trump to literally drop trou and prove how “healthy” he really is.

Marco Rubio will H2Own the stage with another very clever joke about drinking water. Maybe something about needing to “quench my Durst,” a reference to former Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, to show that he’s hip and in touch with the youths.Scissors-32x32.png

Carly Fiorina will be there.Scissors-32x32.png

Showdown in Vegas: Trump, Cruz seek upper hand in crucial debate

The fifth and final Republican debate of 2015 — and the penultimate one before the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 1 — will be held on Tuesday night in Las Vegas.

Nine contenders will take the stage for the main clash on CNN, but the most intense focus will fall on two candidates: businessman Donald Trump, who has led the national polls for several months, and Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), who is rising fast and has snatched the lead from Trump in Iowa.

Third-placed Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) will also be hoping to consolidate his position as a candidate able to straddle the GOP’s conservative-establishment divide.

Meanwhile, middle-ranking contenders will be looking for a breakout moment to vault into the top-tier, while the candidates struggling for traction will seek to avoid the fate of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee who, for the first time, is relegated to the earlier “undercard” debate.

Here’s what the candidates on the main stage need to do at this crucial moment in the race.

Businessman Donald Trump

Trump is polling at almost double the level of the second-placed Cruz in national surveys. That means the real-estate magnate will be center stage — exactly where he likes to be — on Tuesday night. Scissors-32x32.png

Four Storylines to Watch at the Las Vegas GOP Debate

Las Vegas — With just seven weeks until the first votes are cast in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, the candidates are set to face off in a debate at the Venetian in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. Nine candidates will appear on the main debate stage: Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, Jeb Bush, Marco Rubio, Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina, John Kasich, and Rand Paul. Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Lindsey Graham, and George Pataki will face off in an undercard debate several hours before. Here are four storylines to pay attention to as the night goes on:

Trump vs. Cruz?

Donald Trump appears to be itching for a fight with Ted Cruz, after the New York Times posted audio of Cruz privately dismissing Trump’s candidacy as likely to fade. Trump had said he would not attack Cruz unless the Texas senator attacked him, but, appearing on Fox News Sunday, Trump called Cruz “a little bit of a maniac” and declared: “I don’t think he’s qualified to be president.”

As eager as Trump is for a fight, Cruz appears equally eager to avoid the confrontation, tweeting laudatory comments about his rival, and deflecting the “maniac” jab by posting a clip from the movie Flashdance.Scissors-32x32.png

The GOP contenders' commander in chief test

LAS VEGAS — The Republicans who want to be commander in chief are set to debate Tuesday for the first time since deadly terrorist attacks rocked Europe and the United States, leaving many Americans anxious about their personal security.

That concern, pronounced among Republican primary voters, provides both opportunity and risk for the GOP presidential candidates. Those who project a sense of command and competence on foreign policy and national security issues could have a break out moment and shake up the 2016 campaign. Those who fail the commander in chief test, precisely as Republicans are looking for a strong leader to take on the terrorist threat, could see their campaigns irreparably damaged.

"Terrorism and foreign policy will be a big part of this," said Republican pollster David Winston, who is not aligned with any candidate. "There has been some interesting movement among candidates since the last debate, among the top four or five in particular. This reflects an electorate that is thinking through options, and they are about to get a significant discussion that can introduce new constructs to this primary."Scissors-32x32.png

Well, as Rush just said, no one at CNN is interested in any of the people on that stage tonight becoming president. All they care about is "good television." So they will do all they can to trip them up, get them to attack one another, and make as many as possible look foolish.
