Every time Eddie Brown hikes his beloved Piestewa Peak, he passes by a street sign that still evokes troubling memories of the degrading way people spoke to his mother.

"Squaw Peak Drive," reads a sign at the head of the road leading to the gnarled mountain in east Phoenix.

Brown, the son of a white man and American Indian woman, said it reminds him of the people who called his late mother a "squaw" when he was a boy growing up in southern Arizona. She never protested the term, but he could tell she felt insulted, trivialized.

Best ad today.

Ok, so the only thing you’ll actually love about this satirical Senate candidate is that he’s honest; he’s not the kind of character you’d want to see leading our country.

But the folks who created him - Represent.Us – make a good point.

Too many politicians are willing to say and do whatever they can to get elected, that we end up electing people who care about nothing but themselves and spend their entire term working toward their next campaign.

Don’t let phony political ads determine whom you vote for; there’s much more to a person than the ego trip they give in a 30-second campaign spot.

In Jesse Ventura trial, co-author says story is true - and minor
Marino Eccher
07/17/2014

In the eyes of Chris Kyle's co-author, the former Navy SEAL's bestseller "American Sniper" was at its heart about many things: War, family, sacrifice, action, heroism.

Jesse Ventura getting decked in a bar? Not so much.

"It's a bar fight, for crying out loud," Jim DeFelice testified Thursday. "Nobody's going to buy the book because of him."

A 2012 popular book on power-hungry narcissists suggests that narcissists typically display most, and sometimes all, of the following traits:

An obvious self-focus in interpersonal exchanges
Problems in sustaining satisfying relationships
A lack of psychological awareness (see insight in psychology and psychiatry, egosyntonic)
Difficulty with empathy
Problems distinguishing the self from others (see narcissism and boundaries)
Hypersensitivity to any insults or imagined insults (see criticism and narcissists, narcissistic rage and narcissistic injury)
Vulnerability to shame rather than guilt
Haughty body language
Flattery towards people who admire and affirm them (narcissistic supply)
Detesting those who do not admire them (narcissistic abuse)
Using other people without considering the cost of doing so
Pretending to be more important than they really are
Bragging (subtly but persistently) and exaggerating their achievements
Claiming to be an "expert" at many things
Inability to view the world from the perspective of other people
Denial of remorse and gratitude

Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder[1] in which a person is excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity, mentally unable to see the destructive damage they are causing to themselves and to others in the process. It is estimated that this condition affects one percent of the population. First formulated in 1968, NPD was historically called megalomania, and is a form of severe egocentrism.

Some people diagnosed with a narcissistic personality disorder are characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance. They have a sense of entitlement and demonstrate grandiosity in their beliefs and behavior. They have a strong need for admiration, but lack feelings of empathy.

Other symptoms in addition to the ones defined by DSM-IV-TR include: Is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends, has trouble keeping healthy relationships with others, easily hurt or rejected, appears unemotional, and exaggerating special achievements and talents, setting unrealistic goals for himself/herself."

(Thanks to wiki for the summations)

The Week in Pictures: Negligence Edition
Steven Hayward
July 18, 2014

In past conflicts between Israel and its enemies, there came a time when the United States would call up Israel and essentially order them to stop their offensive against Hamas, the PLO, Hezbollah, etc. Of course, that’s back when the U.S. took some pride in its influence in the world, and where American power had some credibility. You really don’t have the feeling that Obama can ring up Israel and tell them when to stop their Gaza operation. Maybe if he’d enforced his “red line” in Syria, or taken meaningful steps against Putin, MH 17 might not have been shot down, folks in the Middle East would take his phone callsl and Iran wouldn’t be able to demand a five-month extension of the nuclear talks. Memo to Barack: this is what happens when you seek deliberately to reduce U.S. influence: you have less influence when you really want it—and when the world needs it. Meanwhile, is there any excuse for keeping Harry Reid around, except for comic relief?

Beck on Illegals: Send Them to Sanctuary Cities

Walter Hudson

18 July 2014.

On today's Fightin Words podcast: On his radio program Thursday, Glenn Beck made a great point regarding the expanding immigration crisis on the southern border. He called for illegals to be harbored among those advocating for their amnesty. We explore the brilliance behind this notion.
