Obama will discuss guns on North Side

Minneapolis trip will be his first on-the-road pitch for his plan.

MATT MCKINNEY

February 2, 2013

Amid a fierce debate that followed the Connecticut school massacre, President Obama will visit Minneapolis on Monday afternoon as he moves beyond the White House to sell the nation on his plan to fight gun violence.

No agenda for the meeting has been made public, though some of those who will attend said they expect the roundtable discussion, which will be closed to the public, will cover some of the president's plan and lessons learned locally. Among those attending will be Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.

The group will meet at the Minneapolis Police Department's Special Operations Center at 4115 N. Dupont Av., in the midst of a neighborhood traumatized by abundant illegal guns. The center is just four blocks south of the spot last summer where 5-year-old Nizzel George was shot to death in his home in a gang dispute. Last year, police seized an average of one gun every day in the Fourth Precinct (north Minneapolis).

No doubt "The One's" new super duper really nifty gun control will stop this kind of thing.

17-year-old pleads guilty in fatal Minneapolis shooting of 5-year-old

17-year-old gang member who blindly shot up a home likely faces 28 years in prison after admitting role in death of Nizzel George.

NICOLE NORFLEET

2/1/13

Stephon Shannon hadn't meant to kill a sleeping 5-year-old when he blindly shot up a north Minneapolis home last summer.

What the teenager was after were rival gang members and vengeance, prosecutors said Friday, when Shannon pleaded guilty to second-degree intentional murder for the benefit of a gang in the shooting death of Nizzel George.

The plea from Shannon, the older of two teenage suspects in Nizzel's death, brings some degree of closure in a case that put a glaring spotlight on the problems of youth gun violence and gangs in north Minneapolis. Nizzel was the second of two small children to be killed by stray bullets in their north Minneapolis homes in a six-month period, sparking an outcry from residents, activists and politicians.

We need a law that requires criminals to under go background checks before they are able to buy a gun from another criminal or steal a gun.

Weather-predicting groundhog declares an early spring

An end to winter's bitter cold will come soon, according to Pennsylvania's famous groundhog.

Following a recent stretch of weather that's included both record warm temperatures and bitter cold, tornadoes in the South and Midwest and torrential rains in the mid-Atlantic, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair Saturday in front of thousands but didn't see his shadow.

GOOD DOG!!!

Barney was a beautiful dog and obviously had good sense.

Former President George W. Bush released this statement, mourning the passing of his dog, Barney Bush:

Laura and I are sad to announce that our Scottish Terrier, Barney, has passed away. The little fellow had been suffering from lymphoma and after twelve and a half years of life, his body could not fight off the illness.

Barney and I enjoyed the outdoors. He loved to accompany me when I fished for bass at the ranch. He was a fierce armadillo hunter. At Camp David, his favorite activity was chasing golf balls on the chipping green.

Barney guarded the South Lawn entrance of the White House as if he were a Secret Service agent. He wandered the halls of the West Wing looking for treats from his many friends. He starred in Barney Cam and gave the American people Christmas tours of the White House. Barney greeted Queens, Heads of State, and Prime Ministers. He was always polite and never jumped in their laps.

Barney was by my side during our eight years in the White House. He never discussed politics and was always a faithful friend. Laura and I will miss our pal.

Cynthia Brim, Cook County judge facing trial, expected to plead insanity

LISA DONOVAN

February 2, 2013

When Cook County Judge Cynthia Brim goes to trial this week on a misdemeanor battery charge, her attorney is expected to argue she’s not guilty by reason of insanity, the Sun-Times has learned.

As the Sun-Times first reported, a psychiatric examination determined Brim was “legally insane” when she allegedly tossed her keys at a security checkpoint in the downtown Daley Center court complex on March 9 last year, shoved a sheriff’s deputy and struggled with officers as they arrested her.

“Ms. Cynthia Brim was suffering from symptoms of a psychotic mental disorder, i.e. schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type, as a result of which she lacked the substantial capacity to appreciate the criminality of her act,” according to Dr. Mathew S. Markos, a psychiatrist who heads the Cook County court system’s forensic clinical services.

Electric cars head toward another dead end

Recent moves by Japan's two largest automakers suggest that the electric car, after more than 100 years of development and several brief revivals, still is not ready for prime time - and may never be.

(Snip)

Despite the promise of "green" transportation - and despite billions of dollars in investment, most recently by Nissan Motor Co - EVs continue to be plagued by many of the problems that eventually scuttled electrics in the 1910s and more recently in the 1990s. Those include high cost, short driving range and lack of charging stations.

The public's lack of appetite for battery-powered cars persuaded the Obama administration last week to back away from its aggressive goal to put 1 million electric cars on U.S. roads by 2015.
