Man in Charlotte accused of recruiting for Islamic State, planning training compound
Mark Washburn and Tim Funk
August 4 2016

A man who had lived in Charlotte about a month was arrested Thursday, accused of trying to recruit domestic terrorists for the Islamic State group and claiming to be planning a secret training camp on U.S. soil. Erick Jamal Hendricks, 35, used social media networks to contact and recruit Americans for the cause of the Islamic State, also known as IS, ISIS and ISIL, federal authorities said, and he appeared to have ties to a 2015 attack at a Texas event mocking pictures of the prophet Muhammad.

Hendricks was obsessed with security while connecting on social media sites, unbeknownst that he’d been communicating with an FBI undercover operative and others who’d agreed to cooperate with investigators, according to an affidavit by Scott Hare, an FBI counter-terrorism agent. In a March 2015 meeting in Baltimore with others he believed to be part of his ISIS ring, Hendricks said he had land in Arkansas where he could “get off the grid” and prepare for bloody battle with law enforcement.

Three months later, Hendricks told the FBI operative that he wanted to construct a training center “hidden in plain sight … Farm, house, garden, tunnels,” Hare said in the affidavit. In communications with others, he claimed to have 10 operatives in the United States and hoped to raid military depots for weapons, authorities said.

It is possible that both are true. I mean your grasp of reality has to be somewhat....tenuous to buy what the Islamic terrorists are selling to begin with.

Thai resorts of Phuket and Hua Hin hit by deadly explosions
Thai police on alert for further attacks after multiple explosions on Thursday and Friday leave at least four people dead
Oliver Holmes and agencies
Friday 12 August 2016

A series of apparently coordinated blasts across Thailand, including in the tourism hotspots of Hua Hin and Phuket, have left at least four dead and dozens injured.

Police said 10 foreigners were injured in the violence, some of the worst in the country since the military seized power in a coup two years ago.

Thai police are on alert for further bombings after the attacks late on Thursday and early on Friday. No responsibility has been claimed for the bombings but Thai authorities were quick to rule out Islamist or international terrorism, instead blaming “local sabotage”.

The suspect planned to carry out a suicide bombing in a public area in an urban center during rush hour, Deputy Royal Canadian Police Commander Mike Cabana said. He identified the suspect as Aaron Driver, 24, originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba.

A terrorist attack in Roanoke
Paul Mirengoff
August 23, 2016

A man in Roanoke County is in custody after attacking a couple in an apartment complex. The man, Wasil Farooqui, slashed the victims with a knife while allegedly shouting “Allahu Akbar.” The couple doesn’t know Farooqui. Apparently he selected them at random to be attacked.

The male victim has neck wounds, but the police says this doesn’t look like an attempted beheading. The victim apparently has wounds all over his body.

He was able to fight off Farooqui, though, forcing him to flee. Farooqui was captured when he showed up wounded at the same emergency room where the victims were being treated. Not too smart.

Farooqui has been charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding and is being held without bond. Why not charge him with attempted murder, I wonder.

An FBI special agent is on the scene now. He assures the community that the FBI is “working to determine the nature of the incident.”

The nature of the incident seems clear enough. Surely, it is terrorism.

A Cheshire florist has said he is not scared after his photograph appeared in an Islamic State propaganda magazine as an example of a potential target for terrorists.

Stephen Leyland, 64, became the unlikely target of death threats, despite “not knowing any jihadis”, after a photograph showing him smiling in front of his flower stall found its way into the magazine Rumiyah.

It featured alongside a caption urging the extremist group’s supporters to take “even the blood of a merry Crusader citizen selling flowers to passersby”. The photograph was taken from the florist’s business website. He said his appearance in the magazine came as “a bit of a shock”.

Leyland describes himself as “The Flower Man” and an “old fashioned market trader” on his website.

Arrested French women, directed by Islamic State, planned Paris attack
Gérard Bon | PARIS
9/9/16

Three French women arrested after a car loaded with gas cylinders was found near Notre Dame cathedral were planning to attack a Paris railway station under the direction of Islamic State, French officials said on Friday. The Peugeot 607 was found early on Sunday laden with seven gas cylinders and three jerry cans of diesel, said police, adding that no detonators were discovered.

"A terrorist cell ...has been dismantled," Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins told a news conference "The transition to action by these young women, who were directed by individuals within the ranks of Islamic State in Syria, shows that this organization wants to create female fighters."

The car's discovery put the French capital on high alert, reviving fears about further attacks in a country where Islamist militants have killed more than 230 people since January 2015.

The Interior Ministry said the intended target had been Gare de Lyon, a mainline train station in central Paris, and that all stations had been put on alert. Reuters reporters witnessed police cordoning off two central districts after suspicious vehicles were found.

One of the three women stabbed a police officer during her arrest before being shot and wounded, Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said late on Thursday. He gave their ages as 19, 23 and 39.

British man jailed for IS murder of ‘black magic’ imam
Mohammed Syeedy gets 24 years in prison for involvement in killing 71-year-old Jalal Uddin, while main culprit believed to be in Syria
AFP
September 17, 2016

A former Manchester United stadium steward was jailed Friday for the Islamic State group-inspired murder of an imam who practiced a form of healing which he saw as “black magic” incompatible with Islam. Mohammed Syeedy, 21, was sentenced to a minimum of 24 years as the getaway driver in the killing of Jalal Uddin. Uddin, 71, was bludgeoned to death with a blunt instrument, possibly a hammer, in a children’s play area in Rochdale, northwest England in February.

The man who allegedly delivered the blows, Mohammed Kadir, fled Britain three days after the death and is now thought to be in Syria. Judge David Maddison said Uddin was a “gentle” man who had been attacked because he practiced Ruqya faith healing. “You and your co-offender saw the practice as a form of black magic that could not be tolerated within Islam,” he told Syeedy as he sentenced him at Manchester Crown Court.

Prosecutors said Uddin, who reportedly moved to Rochdale from Bangladesh 15 years ago, had made amulets designed to bring good luck to the person who wore them. They said his attackers were followers of Salafism and believed this practice was punishable by death. They added that Syeedy had been radicalized by the IS group and that police found IS-related videos on his phone as well as flags and a headband featuring jihadist symbols at his home.

HASAKAH, Syria: A suicide bomber has struck a wedding in northeast Syria as the bride and groom were exchanging vows, killing 34 people and wounding dozens, the local Kurdish government said.

The bomber blew himself up late Monday in the village of Tall Tawil in Hasakah province where a Kurdish party official was getting married. Daesh claimed the attack, saying that one of its members had fired on a gathering near Hasakah city before blowing himself up, though it did not mention a wedding.

Rows of seats in the hall that hosted the party were still covered in blood on Tuesday morning when an AFP photographer visited the scene. Broken tiles littered the floor and torn fabric hung from the ceiling. A thick layer of dust covered a sound mixer and keyboard.

“As the bride and groom were exchanging their vows I saw a man wearing a thick black jacket pass beside me,” a witness named Ahmad said. “I thought he looked strange and a few seconds later there was an enormous explosion.

Oct 31 2016

A woman has attacked two police officers with a knife as they entered her apartment in the German city of Mülheim. Authorities found material linked to the so-called "Islamic State" (IS) within. The 53-year-old woman attacked the two police officers after they entered her apartment in the western city of Mülheim on Sunday morning.

The police officers were checking in on her after she had allegedly thrown furniture, including a lamp, stools and books, out the window. When she refused to open the door, the officers broke it down.

Once they were inside the apartment, the veiled woman attacked them with a box-cutter while apparently shouting "Allahu akbar," or "God is great."

Massive Car-Bomb Targets Market in Somalia Capital Dozens Killed
Derek Gannon
11.26.2016

9df06ce7-e7d1-47ce-bcfc-d4f015312933.jpg

Mogadishu Somalia – An unknown assailant drove a car laden with explosives into a police checkpoint guarding a popular vegetable market densely populated with innocent Somali’s in the Afisiyone area within the Waberi district in the southern capital city Mogadishu today. Officials on the ground have reported that at least 10 people have been confirmed dead on the scene with scores more wounded. Witnesses describe utter carnage with blood, body parts, and viscera scattered throughout the blast site. One local witness, Abdulahi Osman, told the Agence France-Presse(AFP) that “There was chaos and severed dead bodies strewn around the street, the market was so busy with people shopping when the blast ripped through the area. I saw many dead bodies but I could not count, I have helped collect more than 10 of them.”

The local security official, Major Mohamed Hussein, whom had been on the scene detailed the attack by stating that the police had made one arrest of a suspect that security forces reported to have seen fleeing the vehicle on foot and remotely detonating the car-bomb. Major Hussein believes the suspect in the attack was targeting the police station in a neighborhood that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was located at visiting a university. Most of the victims were civilians and traders in what is known as the Suuqa Beerta vegetable market. And with the market being so busy at the time the death toll is almost assuredly to rise. A medical source a one Dr. Abdukadir Abdirahman Adem whom is the director of the Amin Ambulance Service has been reporting to various news agencies that nearly 30 people have been killed or pronounced dead so far from the blast. Dr. Adem told AFP News “Our ambulances have collected 13 wounded civilians and 28 dead bodies, the toll could be higher because of the density of the location where the blast occurred.” These reports have yet to be confirmed by official Somali governmental sources.

Not one terrorist organization or entity has claimed responsibility yet. However Harakat al-Shabaab has been heavily suspected of carrying out this latest atrocity as car-bombs and suicide attacks have become the groups guerrilla tactic of choice as of late....................(Snip)

The explosion appeared to have come from a rubbish bin in Cairo along a route used to access the entrance to the world heritage site, which lies in a western suburb of the capital. Giza, one of the the seven wonders of the world and the only one to remain largely intact, welcomes thousands of British tourists every year.

Schoolgirl suicide bombers kill 30 in Nigerian market -army
Emmanuel Ande
December 9, 2016

YOLA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Two schoolgirl suicide bombers killed 30 people and wounded dozens more in a coordinated attack on a crowded market in the northeastern Nigerian town of Madagali on Friday, an army spokesman said. The bombings bore the hallmark of Islamist militant group Boko Haram, which has been waging an insurgency to set up a state adhering to a strict interpretation of Muslim laws in the northeast. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. "The attack in Madagali was carried out by two female school children. They detonated two bombs at the same time killing 30 people and they also died," said Major Badare Akintoye, a spokesman for an army unit in the nearby town of Mubi.

He said 57 people were also hurt in the bombings in Adamawa state. Boko Haram has frequently targetted crowded areas -- such as markets, places of worship and refugee camps -- in suicide bomb attacks across northeast Nigeria and in neighbouring Cameroon and Niger.

The jihadist group has killed some 15,000 people and forced more than two million people to flee their homes.

Bombing at Egypt's main Coptic Christian cathedral kills 25

MARIAM FAM and HAMZA HENDAWI

Dec. 11 2016

CAIRO (AP) -- A bombing at a chapel adjacent to Egypt's main Coptic Christian cathedral killed 25 people and wounded another 49 during Sunday Mass, one of the deadliest attacks carried out against the religious minority in recent memory and a grim reminder of Egypt's difficult struggle to restore security and stability after nearly six years of turmoil.

The attack came two days after a bomb elsewhere in Cairo killed six policemen, an assault claimed by a shadowy group that authorities say is linked to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood. That group - called "Hasm," or "Decisiveness" - distanced itself from the attack in a statement issued Sunday night, saying it does not as a principle kill women, children, the elderly or worshippers.

The statement, at least in theory, leaves the extremist Islamic State group or like-minded independent militants as the chief suspects.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Sunday's attack. However, Islamic militants have targeted Christians in the past, including a New Year's Day bombing at a church in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria in 2011 that killed at least 21 people. More recently, churches and Christian property in southern Egypt were targeted in the aftermath of the military's July 2013 ouster of an Islamist president. Those were blamed on Brotherhood supporters and ultraorthodox Salafi Muslims.
