Press freedom and government transparency are either important or theyre not. If theyre not, then yeah, an off-the-record session in which the powers that be privately assure a guild that theyre on their side will do just fine. Happens all the time in the Obama White House. CNN and McClatchy on Thursday joined The Associated Press, The New York Times and The Huffington Post in refusing to go to one of the Department of Justices off the record sessions about the departments handling of investigations into journalists.
