Speaker Boehner: 2013 Should Be the Year We Begin to Solve Our Debt Through Tax & Entitlement Reform

WASHINGTON, DC – At a press conference today, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said averting the fiscal cliff without raising tax rates is the responsible path forward, and that 2013 should be the year Washington begins “to solve our debt through tax reform and entitlement reform.” You can watch Boehner above and read several key excerpts of his remarks below:

Boehner: We Need to Avert Fiscal Cliff Without Raising Tax Rates:

“On Wednesday, I outlined a responsible path forward to avert the fiscal cliff without raising tax rates. About 24 hours after I spoke, the Congressional Budget Office released a report showing that the most harmful consequences of the fiscal cliff come from increasing tax rates. According to Ernst & Young, raising the top rates would destroy nearly 700,000 jobs in our country.”

Boehner: House Took Action to Avert Fiscal Cliff, Replaced ‘Sequester,’ Paved Way for Tax & Entitlement Reform:

“The members of our majority understand how important it is to avert the fiscal cliff. That’s why the House took action earlier this year to replace the ‘sequester’ with other types of cuts. And it’s also why over the summer we passed a bill to extend all the current tax rates for one year so that we had time to overhaul our tax code. And it is why I outlined a responsible path forward, where we can replace the spending cuts and extend the current rates, paving the way for entitlement reform as well as tax reform with lower tax rates.”

Boehner: Pro-Growth Tax & Entitlement Reform Will Grow Economy, Bring Jobs Home:

“2013 should be the year we begin to solve our debt through tax reform and entitlement reform. I'm proposing that we avert the fiscal cliff together in a manner that ensures that 2013 is finally the year that our government comes to grips with the major problems that are facing us. This will bring jobs home, result in a stronger, healthier economy. And a stronger, healthier economy means more Americans working and more revenues – which is what the president is seeking.”

Boehner: This Is An Opportunity for the President to Lead:

“This framework can lead to common ground, and I hope the president will respond today in that same spirit. As I said on Wednesday, this is an opportunity for the president to lead. This is his moment to engage the Congress and work towards a solution that can pass both chambers. Earlier this week, the president and I had a short conversation. It was cordial. I think we both understand that trying to find a way to avert the fiscal cliff is important for our country. And I’m hopeful that productive discussions can begin soon so that we can forge an agreement that can pass the Congress.”

......like lambs to the slaughter............

I think that he made this statement to put the pressure on the One to come up with solutions. Which means. Ya, I guess your right - lambs to the slaughter.

Falling off of the cliff will be averted this time. But in the long run, the economy is in for quite a jolt with 0. Maybe we are headed for the same situation Carter created. High interest rates, inflation and unemployment.

How will it be averted? What resources have we not yet used that will reverse the course we're on? Carter didn't start his disaster with a $16 trillion debt. We're not playing with our last chips here. We're already playing with the house's money, and Guido and Bruno are standing behind us so we can't sneak out.

Rokke, I wish I had an answer for you. As I said before, I don't think they -the pols- will come up with a long-term answer, whatever it may be. They have the cliff to avoid and right behind that comes increasing the debt ceiling. Projected an increase is going to be needed this year? Why does a Chinese fire drill come to mind? I see the national debt in the 20+ trillion range during this term. Congress is going to be busy putting out fires for the next four years or investigating the administration. Nothing of any substance is going to happen. Maybe immigration reform will be attempted, but that may be it. Maybe an impeachment attempt will be made too. We are in for four years like no other. It is going to scary and exciting at the same time.

I know you can't say anything about the president, so I will say it for you. O is/was a disaster like this country has never seen before.

Good luck America.

@Casino67, I am refreshingly relieved of having my mouth taped shut. Obama is the worst individual to hit our country since its inception. Lethally incompetent. Nothing that happens in the next four years will surprise me, unless its an economic upturn.

Are you going to get a military pension? I read that if so, you still can't talk bad about pres.

That's not true. The Hatch Act is what limits a government employee from taking a public political stance. It does not cover retirees. Otherwise, retired military members could never run for office. And yes, I will get a pension. And no, I am absolutely not convinced I will ever see a single dime of it. Or social security...or any other government run pension.

And Boehner said he wants Obama to succeed.

If Obama succeeds the working men and women lose.

I can't fix it, so I'm not going to worry about it. I'm going to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Simple as that.

Also, when reading this kind of stuff, VERIFY the information. Boehner is seriously being taken out of context on almost everything. The left is hoping this will cause us to turn on each other and thereby destroy the party forever.

Be careful unless you hear it out of his mouth in its entirety.

It's Your Move, Mr. President

David Garth

11/10/12

The American people voted to retain Barack Obama. Fine. It has been settled -- time to move on. Let's consider this fun fact first, from CNN:

Barring serious efforts to curb the growth in the country's debt, by 2020 Washington could be spending 92 cents of every tax dollar on Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and interest alone. That would leave just 8 cents to pay for everything else.

Wonderful. Eight cents. I want the liberals to explain how this is going to work. And please, in the name of all things sacred, don't give me Barack Obama bull about the wealthy folks "paying a little more." You can double the tax rate of the top ten percent of wage earners, and it doesn't even begin to address the problem. Are the liberals going to bite the bullet and start cutting from Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security? Perhaps, but it doesn't seem likely.

Yo, Boehner, speak for yourself. I am not ready to be led - that assumes a leader, and Zero is not a leader.

Dunno about that - - Obama is a great leader!

That is to say leading America over the Darwinian cliff of a country in self-destruction mode.

I searched through my old Tweets and my history on computer and cannot find what I was referring to. I will check the UCMJ and see if I can find the citation.

Rokke this is not exactly what I remember reading, but it has an element of what I said about retirees.

"It's interesting to note at this point that Article 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) makes it a crime for commissioned officers to use contemptuous words against the above officeholders. Commissioned officers who violate this provision can be court-martialed for a direct violation of Article 88. But, what about enlisted members and warrant officers?

"DOD Directive 1344.10 - POLITICAL ACTIVITIES BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES ON ACTIVE DUTY, extend these same requirements to all individuals on active duty. Active duty enlisted members and warrant officers who violate these provisions can be charged under Article 92 of the UCMJ, Failure to Obey an Order or Regulation.

"So, what about retired members? Well, DOD Directive 1344.10 only applies to active duty, so retired enlisted and warrant officers can pretty much say anything they want concerning the above office-holders. However, Article 2 of the UCMJ specifically states that retired members are subject to the provisions of the UCMJ. Does that mean that retired commissioned officers are prohibited from using contemptious words against the above officeholders? Technically, yes. A retired commissioned officer who utters contemptuous words against the President or other designated officeholders is technically in violation of Article 88. However, DOD Directive 1352.1 - MANAGEMENT AND MOBILIZATION OF REGULAR AND RESERVE RETIRED MILITARY MEMBERS, prohibits recalling a retired military member to active duty solely for the purpose of subjecting them to court-martial jurisdiction. Therefore, unless that retired commissioned officer was recalled to active duty for other purposes, it would not be possible to subject them to court-martial for a violation of Article 88."
