At least 14 people were killed and 50 wounded when a gunman opened fire during an early Friday morning screening of the new Batman movie at an Aurora, Colorado, theater, Police Chief Dan Oates told reporters.

 

The heavily armed suspect, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was apprehended by police in a rear parking lot of the theater, Frank Fania, a police spokesman, told CNN. The suspect was not immediately identified, though Fania said he was believed to be in his early 20s.

 

"He did not resist. He did not put up a fight," Fania said. Police seized a rifle and a handgun from the suspect, and another gun was found in the theater, he said.

Tragedy reminds we are all united as an American family

 

Federal government stands ready to do whatever is necessary to bring person responsible for heinous crime to justice {applause}

 

We may never understand what leads anyone to terrorize fellow human beings like this

 

We do know what makes worth living

 

They were mothers and fathers husbands and wives sons and daughters friends and neighbors

They had hopes for the feature and dreams for the future that were not yet fulfilled

Our time here is limited and is precious

What matters at end of the day is not the trivial things,

ultimately it is how we treat one another and love another {applause}

that's what we do on a daily basis, give our lives purpose that's what matters, what we do for each other, those we loved

that's why we are here

my daughters go to the movie, what if Malia and Sasha had gone to the movies

Michelle and I can hug our daughters a little tighter tonight

This is a day for prayer and reflection {applause}

 

What I would ask everybody to do

I would ask we pause for a moment

for all victims of less publicized acts of violence that plague our community every day

 

I hope all of you will keep p of Aurora in hearts and minds today

 

May the Lord bring them comfort and healing in hard days to come

 

I am grateful to all of you

I hope that as a consequence of today's events you spend a little time thinking of the incredible blessings that God has given us

"An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect," ABC News said in a statement. "ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted."

"ABC News is the only network or cable news channel to suggest a possible Tea Party connection, which Ross based off a single Tea Party Patriots webpage that has the name "Jim Holmes."

Just because it hasn't happened... doesn't mean that it couldn't happen.

 

Very good point! And of course if something could happen, that means at some point it will happen.

Neighbors say the family belonged to a Presbyterian church and hosted a Christmas party for residents.

A furniture mover who lives several blocks from the suspect’s Aurora apartment building said he shared a beer with him Tuesday at a neighborhood bar where they talked about Denver Bronco Peyton Manning.

 

Jackie Mitchell said he recognized Holmes’ photo on television as the guy he met at the bar. He described him as smart with a “swagger.”

 

“We just talked about football. He had a backpack and geeky classes and seemed like a real intelligent guy and I figured he was one of the college students,” he said.

 

There was no reference made to a planned shooting, Mitchell said.

Well I hope not....
