WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court has agreed to decide a case involving Arizona's controversial anti-illegal immigration law, S.B. 1070.

Arizona has asked the justices to allow the state to begin enforcing measures that have been blocked by lower courts at the Obama administration's request. Among those provisions is one that requires police, while enforcing other laws, to question a person's immigration status if officers suspect he is in the country illegally.

On Monday the court announced it would decide Arizona v. United States, the S.B. 1070 case. Justice Elena Kagan will be recused, presumably due to her work in the Obama Administration as Solicitor General.snip

House Cloakroom: December 12 – December 16

Analysis: This week the House will take up two large year end packages. The first will be the extension of the payroll tax cut, unemployment insurance, TANF and the “doc fix.” The cost of the bill is offset through a federal pay freeze, means testing of Medicare, flood insurance reform and increases in fees for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The bill also includes a provision to speed approval of the Keystone XL pipeline and stop the EPA’s Boiler MACT regulations. The House will also take up the “megabus” that includes the all the appropriations bills for FY 2012 that have yet to pass the House and Senate. The current continuing resolution funding the government will expire on Friday, December 16.

Senate Cloakroom: December 12 – December 16

Analysis: This will be a very busy week on the Senate floor. The week will begin with a vote on the nomination of Mari Carmen Aponte to be the ambassador to El Salvador. She currently holds the position through a recess appointment. The Senate will then debate and vote on two versions of a Balanced Budget Amendment as required by the Budget Control Act. The Republican version includes a 18% spending cap, a three-fifths vote to raise the debt ceiling and a two-thirds vote to raise taxes. The Democrat version does not include a cap, allows the amendment to be waived by a three-fifths vote and includes a carve out for Social Security. The Senate will also take up the payroll tax cut, unemployment insurance, TANF and “doc fix” extensions bill once it is approved by the House along with the “megabus” appropriations bill. It is also possible that they will take up the conference report on the Department of Defense Authorization bill if the conferees reach an agreement or the detainee provisions may be included in the defense section of the “megabus” appropriations bill.

As Americans struggle, the Obamas make do with 37 Christmas trees

The economy may be weak, unemployment strong and the first family soon to vacate the White House for another half-month of vacation in Hawaii.

But the Obamas have gone all out in decorating their house this year, including a nearly quarter-ton gingerbread White House.

They have also installed 37 different Christmas trees. Thirty of the trees are live, or were, including one nearly 19-feet tall from Wisconsin. Seven of the three dozen Christmas trees are artificial or homemade including, of course, one from recyclables.

snip

Virtually every room has also been decorated for the holidays with some kind of a replica of the Obamas' dog, Bo, who's being made into a kind of first family Christmas canine symbol.

The Bo's are made of all sorts of materials and come in all sizes. There are Bo's made of pom-poms (750 of them), Bo's made from about 2,000 pieces of licorice, Bo's made from some 35 yards of wool felt and Bo's made from nearly 7,000 feet of plastic trash bags. There's even a nine-inch Bo made from hundreds of buttons.

snip

"I know for some of you, this holiday season will be tough," she told some visitors. "But hopefully, it's times like this that make you know that you live in a grateful nation, and that we are just so inspired by your sacrifice. And hopefully, this is a memory that will stay with you every holiday season."

Justice Elena Kagan said Monday that she would recuse herself from the challenge to Arizona's controversial immigration laws, presumably because she served as President Obama's solicitor general when the federal government filed the original lawsuit against the state.

Her recusal opens up the possibility for a rare 4-4 split on the court; since a lower court blocked provisions of the law, the tie would uphold that ruling and function as a win for the Obama administration. But the court would not be able to settle the larger issue of whether the Arizona statute is constitutional in the event of a tie.

Obama calls on Iran to give back downed US drone

WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama is pressing his request that Iran return the U.S. surveillance drone captured by the country's armed forces.

Obama said he wouldn't comment "on intelligence matters that are classified." But, he said during a White House news conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that the U.S. wants the top-secret aircraft back. "We have asked for it back. We'll see how the Iranians respond," Obama said.snip

President Barack Obama has worked closely with Planned Parenthood to promote abortion since his election in 2008 and that relationship grew closer as he has hired a former abortion business official to run his campaign in North Carolina.

The Obama campaign hired Lindsay Siler, the former director of public policy for Planned Parenthood Health Systems, to head its efforts in North Carolina, one of the pivotal battleground states Obama took from the Republican column in 2008 to pave his way to the White House.snip

The Hill

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) suggested on Monday that millionaires who create jobs are a mere figment of Republicans' imaginations.

"Millionaire job creators are like unicorns,” said Reid from the Senate floor. “They are impossible to find and don't exist."

Reid's frustration has grown in past weeks as Republicans have repeatedly and overwhelmingly blocked almost every fragment of President Obama's jobs package brought to the floor because Democrats have attempted to pay for them by raising taxes on millionaires. Republicans say they oppose that tax because it would hamper job creation.

“But you’re even nice to the dishwasher…”

Dec 12th, 2011 by Elizabeth Scalia

A Bronx mugger steps out of an idea, into wonder:

Julio Diaz has a daily routine. Every night, the 31-year-old social worker ends his hour-long subway commute to the Bronx one stop early, just so he can eat at his favorite diner.

But one night last month, as Diaz stepped off the No. 6 train and onto a nearly empty platform, his evening took an unexpected turn.

He was walking toward the stairs when a teenage boy approached and pulled out a knife.

“He wants my money, so I just gave him my wallet and told him, ‘Here you go,’” Diaz says.

As the teen began to walk away, Diaz told him, “Hey, wait a minute. You forgot something. If you’re going to be robbing people for the rest of the night, you might as well take my coat to keep you warm.”

It would be interesting to know how this compares with other administrations.

I've been trying to find a reputable site that gives that info, nickydog!. No luck so far but surely did enjoy seeing the Bush pictures again.

But really. They say they are honoring the military, yet Bo is the focus?

2007 White House had 33 Christmas trees.

2006 What does it take to turn the White House into a winter wonderland? Try 4,638 red ornament balls, 17 Christmas trees, 269 wreaths and 1,089 feet of garland.

Not to come to the defense of the Obama's or Michelle (NEVER!), but I honestly don't think they have much if any input into how the White House is decorated for Christmas. There is a staff that does that. MAYBE somebody ran the plans by Michelle and she just said fine. The process probably starts for the next year almost as soon as they take the old decorations down.

Makes sense. And may they enjoy their first and only term in our White House at Christmas.

Hate to disagree, but the First Lady has the LAST word in the decoration of the White House.

Just saw this commercial on FOX this morning.

I thought it was great and it really made me laugh. We need more like this!

The dirty little secret is union members who are not Democrats are being disenfranchised.

Oh and go ahead and try to exercise your rights under the Beck Act....go ahead..good luck with that.

That IS a good ad! It would be even better if they could move it on to CNN, MSNBC and the networks. Dream on....
