The Biden administration has instructed Facebook as to four ways that they should deal with misinformation, saying Facebook "certainly understands what our asks are."

After Biden administration Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy issued an advisory urging big tech companies to "impose clear consequences for accounts that repeatedly violate platform policies," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki used it to call for big tech companies to crack down harder on social media users with "fact-checks" on "misinformation."

A reporter requested that Psaki expand a bit more on "the request for tech companies to be more aggressive" as regards "misinformation. Has the administration been in touch with any of these companies and are there any actions that the federal government can take to ensure their cooperation, because we've seen from the start there's not a lot of action on some of these platforms."

White House admits to ‘flagging’ posts for Facebook that it considers ‘misinformation,’ draws ire

Critics roundly condemned the White House after press secretary Jen Psaki revealed the Biden administration is working with Facebook to flag "problematic" posts that "spread disinformation" on COVID-19.

On Thursday, Psaki was asked a question regarding the Biden administration’s request for tech companies to be more "aggressive" when policing what they referred to as "misinformation." Psaki revealed that the White House is "in regular touch with social media platforms" to handle it.

"We are in regular touch with the social media platforms and those engagements typically happen through members of our senior staff and also members of our COVID-19 team — given, as Dr. Murthy conveyed, this is a big issue, of misinformation, specifically on the pandemic," Psaki explained.

While referencing the team’s actions, Psaki also revealed that they are "flagging" posts on Facebook as part of their efforts.:snip:

The thing is, there was a time when The Government ie Law Enforcement was in close contact with social media (of its day). Why do you thing Groups like The Mafia...KKK stopped using Telephones? There are a couple of "small" differences between Then & Now. 1. They were going after Actual Bad Guys, who were committing Actual Crimes, not having a difference of opinion. 2. The FBI was pretty much non-partisan, and so were trusted by most Americas.

Twitter explodes after Psaki urges Big Tech to unite on bans for 'misinformation' spreaders

The White House is courting intense criticism again Friday after press secretary Jen Psaki said that once users are banned from one social media platform for spreading coronavirus "misinformation," they should be expelled from all others as well.

Remarking on steps social media outlets could take for public health, she advised they "create robust enforcement strategies that bridge their properties and provide transparency about rules. You shouldn't be banned from one platform and not others if you are for providing misinformation out there.":snip:

Facebook’s Top Censorship Board Is Filled With Elite, Power-Loving Bureaucrats

Jordan Davidson

July 16, 2021

Facebook Oversight Board co-chair and Helle Thorning-Schmidt made it very clear that she does not believe free speech is a human right.

“How do you moderate content and how do you find that balance between human rights and free speech, which is a human right, but also other human rights because free speech is not an absolute human right,” the censorship head asked during a live stream this week.

“It has to be balanced with all the human rights and that is what the oversight is there to do,” she added.

Thorning-Schmidt is one of the 20 people who sit on Facebook’s newest attempt to create a mass censorship campaign, which the White House just recently publicly endorsed. The board masquerades as a means of providing support to “people’s right to free expression and ensure those rights are being adequately respected.”

The board’s actions, however, contradict that mission. Their decisions about former President Donald Trump’s ban from the platform and their continued efforts to subdue alternative opinions about COVID-19 have shown, they give anything but an accurate and fair look at content moderation.

WH Mum on Scope of Push to Squelch COVID Misinformation

The surgeon general was stern and authoritative, if not a little out of his normal purview.

Vivek Murthy explained in the White House briefing room this week that advisories from the surgeon general were “reserved for urgent public health threats,” an area that generally begins and ends with the human body. The foods we eat. The medicines we take. The substances we use and sometimes abuse.:snip:

Kevin Harness

Facebook board member Helle Thorning Schmidt claimed Thursday that free speech was not an absolute human right.

Schmidt argued that while she believed freedom of speech was a human right, it could not be absolute and had to be balanced with other human rights. (RELATED: Psaki Says People Should Be Banned On All Social Media If They Are Banned From One Platform)

Schmidt, speaking at a Politico Europe event, addressed how the Facebook board might approach moderating content and determining what kinds of posts should be considered “misinformation.”
