‘Fleebaggers’: A History of Democrats Running Away to Deny a Quorum

Democratic members of the Texas state legislature have fled the state for the second time this year to deny Republicans a quorum to pass voting integrity legislation — flying maskless to Washington, DC, undermining a vote on the right to vote.

The Democrats claim that they are defending democracy. But they are, in fact, subverting it — as Democrats have done for nearly two decades, setting the disruptive precedent that rioters infamously followed at the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

The spectacle of runaway Democrats — memorably dubbed “fleebaggers” in 2011, a play on the pejorative term used by Democrats and establishment media figures to describe the conservative Tea Party — has a long and ignoble history.

The tactic was first tried in 1924, during a mutual standoff in Rhode Island in which Democrats, in the minority, refused to allow Republicans to conduct business, and so the Republicans went to Massachusetts in protest. But the runaway tactic has been typically used by Democrats in recent decades — often with the enthusiastic support of the establishment media.

In 2003, Texas Democrats fled in a failed attempt to prevent Republicans from passing redistricting legislation. 52 Texas House members went to Oklahoma for a week, then 11 Texas Senate members spent 46 days in exile in New Mexico. Their effort failed when party unity cracked, as one of the “Texas Eleven” decided to return home and break the logjam.:snip:

Greg Abbott Hammers Democratic Lawmakers Fleeing To Texas To Block GOP Election Reforms

Dozens of state Democratic lawmakers fled Texas on Monday to break quorum and prevent the GOP-controlled State Legislature from passing election reforms.

At least 51 of 67 House lawmakers boarded chartered flights to Washington, D.C., to protest in support of the For The People Act, which would shift much authority over election processes from the states to the federal government. The walkout comes after Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced a special session of Congress to focus on legislative priorities such as election reforms that were blocked when Democrats broke quorum earlier this year.:snip:

Fleeing the State Is for Losers

The Democrats in the Texas House of Representatives are planning to flee the state to deny a quorum so the Republicans who control the chamber can’t hold a vote on pending legislation about elections. There are 67 Democratic representatives, and if 51 flee, that will be sufficient to deny a quorum in the 150-seat House.

State legislators fleeing the state is one of the most tiresome and unseemly charades in American politics. It’s for losers, in both the actual and pejorative meaning of the word, and it should offend you whether you agree or disagree with the party that does it.

Legislators only ever flee the state when they know they’re going to lose because they’re in the minority. In other words, they know that the people have rejected them at the ballot box.:snip:

Wisconsin Democrats Get on Bus, Flee State

February 17, 2011

A planned state Senate vote on slashing Wisconsin public worker pensions and curbing their unions stalled Thursday after Senate Democrats apparently fled the state.

The contentious vote was postponed because the 33-member Senate must have 20 present for a quorum and not a single Democrat attended. There are only 19 Republicans so at least one Democrat must be present for the Senate to open business.

Police have been sent out to look for the wayward lawmakers, the Associated Press reported. A source said it appeared that the Democrats had boarded a bus headed for Iowa.

I remember it well. They went to the proper hide out though - Illinois.  Like a gang of children, pouting because they lost and their not going to play anymore. Talk about flouting the rule of the people.

Texas State Senate Passes GOP Election Reform Bill

Texas state senators passed a GOP-backed voting reform bill Tuesday night after Democrats fled the state in an effort to delay the passage of another bill in the House, which also looked to make changes to current voting laws.

In a partisan 18-4 vote, all 18 Senate Republicans voted to pass the bill aimed at ensuring election integrity, according to Fox News

The Senate was able to reach a quorum and pass the bill after four Senate Democrats joined Republicans for the vote. :snip:
