Unfortunately, the lesson left-leaners take from the civil rights struggle is that "White America has always been racist." Because when you assign people to identity groups without regard to their individual actions, you can subsume the many white Americans who supported civil rights for blacks with their money, presence on marches, and their own safety in the riots and unrest. They vanish into the "white-wash" of history that teaches young Americans that all blacks are virtuous victims, and all whites are hateful bigots. From that, it's a natural, easy step to believe the narrative that all Republicans (regardless of actual identity group) are white men, and therefore, racist haters... SMFH.
