Attorney General William Barr on Thursday affirmed that Special Counsel Robert Mueller found no evidence of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and the Russians during the 2016 presidential election, as he tangled with reporters at a press conference shortly before releasing Mueller's report to Congress and the public.

The attorney general used the DOJ appearance to defend his handling of the report, amid criticism from congressional Democrats. He rejected the suggestion he's trying to protect President Trump, and then swatted down another question about whether it was strange that Mueller himself was not there.:snip:

The Mueller Report: Early Returns

John Hinderaker

April 18, 2019

One of the Democrats’ basic problems is that “attempting” to obstruct the investigation doesn’t make a lot of sense. If Trump had really wanted to obstruct the investigation, he could simply have terminated it. And Mueller acknowledges that the administration fully cooperated with the investigation in every way. So the “attempts to obstruct” come down to Trump expressing outrage at the fact that a baseless, partisan investigation was hampering his administration. Arguably Trump should have brought the Mueller farce to an end, but he didn’t.

The Democrats are fundraising shamelessly off the report’s release.

Keep Digging Dems! You'll Find that Pony Somewhere in the Manure Pile Known as the Mueller Report

Rick Moran

April 18, 2019

Somewhere buried deep in the Mueller report is incontrovertible evidence that the president of the United States is a Russian spy. I know it. I just know it. It has to be there.

And I just know that Trump is guilty of obstruction of justice. How can he not be? He's guilty of so much that the obstruction is, I'm sure, just the tip of the iceberg.

How do I know? Ask any Democrat.

I can't decide whether it's amusing or pathetic, this desperate desire by Democrats to will the Mueller report to say something it isn't saying. An appropriate cultural reference might be that Democrats are searching for Captain Queeg's missing strawberries even after they know the fruit has been eaten and the culprit found.

Classical? How about Democrat's tearing the castle apart to find the emperor's new clothes?

Ex-DNI Clapper says redacted Mueller report 'pretty devastating'

Kate Sullivan, CNN

Updated 4:36 PM ET, Thu April 18, 2019

Washington (CNN)Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper called the redacted version of special counsel Robert Mueller's report "pretty devastating" on Thursday.

"The attorney general clearly is trying to paint as favorable a light on the Mueller report as possible, and when you read it, it's pretty devastating," Clapper, now a CNN national security analyst, told CNN's Chris Cuomo.
Clapper said the redacted version of the findings from Mueller's nearly two-year long investigation, released by the Justice Department on Thursday, laid out "in very rich detail, the magnitude and pervasiveness of the Russian interference in our election in 2016."

Trump 'acted guilty'

Democratic presidential candidate Eric Swalwell called on Attorney General William Barr to resign over the release of special counsel Robert Mueller's findings, saying he'd "lost the credibility of the American people."

Swalwell, who serves on both the House Judiciary Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, made the comments during a Thursday MSNBC appearance to discuss the release of Mueller's full report—sparing redactions for sensitive information. Despite "no evidence" of collusion between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia during the 2016 election, Swalwell said the report left issues to be addressed.

Mueller's "investigation lays out that the Trump team, the president himself, lied and obstructed in ways that impaired in a material fashion the investigation," the California congressman said. "Just because you may bury the evidence deep enough that we can't find everything you did, we have recourse in the United States, which is obstruction of justice."

Claiming that the findings proved President Donald Trump was a "double digit obstructer," Swalwell turned his fire on Barr.
