Draggingtree
And the First Sanctuary Falls… Douglas January 27, 2017 15 COMMENTS Trump hasn’t even been in office a full week, and it seems like he’s gotten more done than Dubya did in eight years: Fearing a loss of millions of dollars for defying immigration authorities, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday ordered county jails to comply with federal immigration detention requests — effectively gutting the county’s position as a “sanctuary” for immigrants in the country illegally. Gimenez cited an executive order signed Wednesday by President Donald Trump that threatened to cut federal grants for any counties or cities that don’t cooperate fully with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Since 2013, Miami-Dade has refused to indefinitely detain inmates who are in the country illegally and wanted by ICE — not based on principle, but because the federal government doesn’t fully reimburse the county for the expense. https://ricochet.com/406473/and-the-first-sanctuary-falls/
Draggingtree
Trump Has New FBI HQ as Leverage Over Sanctuary County Potential loss of facility worth 11,000 jobs could convince Prince George's officials to obey the law by Edmund Kozak | 27 Jan 2017 at 5:20 AM Prince George’s County, Maryland, is one of two locations vying to be the future location of a brand new, $1 billion FBI headquarters. The county is competing with Springfield, Virginia, to host the new headquarters. The possible locations for the new complex in Prince George’s County are Greenbelt and Landover. “This campus is to include offices for ICE and Border Patrol, yet it will reside in a jurisdiction that openly violates federal law.” The region is famous for its crime and corruption — on Jan. 5, two PG County officials were charged in a liquor license bribery scheme and only five days later, former Maryland Delegate and PG County Council member Will Campos pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges in a different case. http://www.lifezette.com/polizette/trump-has-new-fbi-hq-as-leverage-over-sanctuary-county/
Draggingtree
What’s Wrong With Sanctuary Cities? What Might Be Done? How Might It Affect California? by Timothy Kane Thursday, January 19, 2017 Donald Trump’s immigration policies were widely mischaracterized during the 2016 election campaign. Time and again media critics described Trump as a racist who opposes immigration. The reality is that, as a candidate, Trump embraced legal immigration as part of America’s heritage and a pillar of the economy. He even said that the majority of the eleven million undocumented immigrants who are not convicted criminals would be allowed to stay, focusing his ire on “criminal illegal aliens.” This is hardly an extreme stance, but facts don’t matter to partisan pundits. Who would object to deporting convicted criminals with no right to be in the country in the first place? Unfortunately, three hundred cities and other jurisdictions object. Indeed, thirty-seven city leaders nationwide have reaffirmed their rebellious policies; others such as Boulder, Colorado, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, are joining the movement. Ironically, the sanctuary cities have been in open rebellion for many years, not against Trump but against President Barack Obama with the federal authority has to track down actual killers and other criminals. Draggingtree
Sanctuary Sheriff Faces Removal From Office For Aiding Criminal Illegals Sheriff Hernandez blocking feds from rounding up felon illegals Kit Daniels | Infowars.com - January 28, 2017 is facing removal from office after defying Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s call to end “sanctuary city” policies which aid criminal aliens. Hernandez, whose jurisdiction includes Austin, the capital of Texas, has rejected Abbott’s request to reverse her refusal to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement except in limited circumstances, which Abbott says is hypocritical. “First, you claim you have no legal power to comply with ICE detainers. That proves too much, of course, because by your own admission, Travis County Sheriff’s Office will honor some ICE detainers, for example when the alien is charged with or convicted of capital murder,” Abbott wrote. “You have the exact same legal authority to honor ICE detainers for capital murder cases as you do for other crimes that you personally deem unworthy of enforcement.” http://www.infowars.com/sanctuary-sheriff-faces-removal-from-office-for-aiding-criminal-illegals/

Draggingtree
Does Texas Have Any Sanctuary Cities? The governor is threatening to take funds from local police departments that have “sanctuary city” policies, but are those threats even warranted? February 11, 2016 By Doyin Oyeniyi 2 Comments Late last month, a group of immigration activists met Austin Mayor Steve Adler with demands that the Austin Police Department no longer cooperate with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which would make Austin what conservatives have dubbed a “sanctuary city.” The Texas Tribune defines a sanctuary city as “municipalities that have established policies prohibiting police officers from enforcing immigration laws or cooperating with federal immigration officials.” Generally, when local police departments make a criminal arrest of someone who is in the country illegally, ICE can put in a detainer request for the department to hold the person for a period of up to 48 hours, giving ICE ample time to pick them up. Even though Austin has frequently been named a sanctuary city, the activists left the meeting with Adler disappointed. Although the mayor promised to work on each situation on a case-by-case basis, he didn’t commit to authoring any policy that would prohibit APD from working with ICE. In fact, the confrontation between the activists and the mayor took place shortly after APD and the Travis County Sheriff’s Department representatives pledged to cooperate with the agency. http://www.texasmonthly.com/the-daily-post/does-texas-have-any-sanctuary-cities/ Looking at you dead in the eye, we are not a sanctuary city does that snake bite
Draggingtree
Texas Ready to Remove Officeholders in Sanctuary Cities Lone Star State governor, lawmakers lead fight to rein in rogue localities by Jim Stinson | Updated 10 Feb 2017 at 7:43 AM While Boston and other liberal cities revolt over President Donald Trump’s sanctuary city policy, Texas is getting ready to oust officials who refuse to comply with federal law. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he would “hammer” local officials if they resist federal efforts to deport immigrants in the country illegally, according to the Associated Press. Abbott is apparently betting that job loss is much more likely to catch the attention of officials in sanctuary cities and counties. Texas Republican lawmakers are readying a bill that would allow for criminal charges against city or county officials who intentionally don’t comply. Any county elected official, such as a sheriff, would face immediate removal from office if convicted of official misconduct, AP reported. http://www.lifezette.com/polizette/texas-ready-to-remove-officeholders-in-sanctuary-cities/
Draggingtree
Houston Police Chief ready to reluctantly enforce "sanctuary" law Once Senate Bill 4 goes into effect on Sept. 1, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said he's prepared to lead a police force that allows officers to inquire about the immigration status of people they detain. BY JULIÁN AGUILAR MAY 10, 2017 10 HOURS AGO Before Gov. Greg Abbott signed a controversial immigration bill into law Sunday evening, the leader of one of the state’s largest municipal police force was among those urging him not to. Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo called Senate Bill 4 "detrimental to the tradition of crime fighting." But now that it's law, Acevedo said he's prepared to lead a police force that allows his officers to inquire about the immigration status of people they arrest or detain, including during routine traffic stops. “It prohibits me from prohibiting them from asking a question in terms of immigration status,” he said during a conference call Tuesday morning. “So we’re going to follow the law until the courts tell us otherwise. But it doesn’t require them to make the inquiry.” That last point is crucial to Acevedo, who expressed hope that as soon as his officers realize the risks they place themselves in by becoming de facto immigration agents, most will revert back to focusing on what they are sworn to do: protecting Texans against violent crimes. https://www.texastribune.org/2017/05/10/after-bill-signing-law-enforcement-looks-ahead/
