As has been reported far and wide for the last few days, President-elect Donald Trump will meet with once-rival Mitt Romney Saturday to discuss, if the rumor mill is to be believed, a position in the Trump Cabinet — possibly even the coveted secretary of state.

CNN said Thursday the meeting includes at least two agenda items:

The two men are set to discuss “governing moving forward” and potentially a role for Romney in Trump’s Cabinet, a senior Republican source told CNN on Thursday.

Romney was one member of the establishment GOP who was very vocal in his criticism of Trump, particularly his remarks concerning women saying they were “demeaning” to wives and daughters.

Now, as the two men prepare to meet to see if they are able to come to a meeting of the minds, liberal-leaning media outlets critical of Trump are showing their inability to believe such a cohesion of thought will ever come to pass.

Esquire Magazine, for example, in pondering what might be the purpose and outcome of these two powerful men coming together to discuss the state of the country and the state of the GOP, has decided that perhaps Romney wasn’t the monster he was portrayed to be during the 2012 election cycle as the Republican presidential nominee:

I spent all year thinking to myself, you know, Willard [Mitt Romney]’s not the unprincipled opportunist that he played in our 2012 drama, the guy who ran away from the one decent thing he’d done as governor of the Commonwealth (God save it!) and who subsequently money-whipped his rivals and then lost an election that many people in his party thought he had in the satchel. He really stepped up and told the truth about what was happening to his party, and how what was happening to his party was nothing compared to what could happen to the country.

Furthermore, according to Esquire, Trump is only taking meetings with these establishment types — the author pauses for a minute to entertain that perhaps the president-elect isn’t such an outside within the GOP — to humiliate them when he makes it public that they came begging for work.

________

Or maybe he's just doing the gentlemanly thing and making nice with former rivals?
