Reagan shooter John Hinckley can leave hospital to live in Virginia, judge rules

John Hinckley Jr., the man who shot former President Ronald Reagan, was granted full-time release Wednesday from the psychiatric hospital in Washington, D.C., where he has received treatment for more than three decades.

U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman’s order that Mr. Hinckley will begin a “convalescent leave” on Aug. 5 follows 12 years of incremental rulings that have granted the 61-year-old additional freedoms and time away from St. Elizabeths Hospital.

Judge Friedman wrote that “all of the experts and treatment providers” who testified during a court hearing agreed that Mr. Hinckley’s major depression and psychotic disorder were “in full and sustained remission and have been for more than 20 years.”

“Mr. Hinckley is clinically ready for full-time convalescent leave,” the judge wrote in a 103-page order that outlined numerous requirements for the release.
