Democratic party platform calls for $15 minimum wage in win for Sanders

Sen. Bernie Sanders' effort to shape the Democratic Party's election platform scored a major victory Friday with the approval of an amendment calling for increasing the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour.

 

The self-described "democratic socialist" from Vermont had repeatedly called for the increase during his surprisingly strong campaign for the Democratic nomination. His opponent, presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton, had backed a $12 minimum wage, while saying she approved a $15 minimum wage in certain places.

 

An early draft of the platform contained language more consistent with Clinton’s position, saying that “Americans should earn at least $15 an hour” without explicitly calling for that to be the new federal minimum.

 

However, the party's 187-member Platform Committee approved an amendment saying an increase from the current federal minimum of $7.25 an hour to $15 should happen “over time."

If you raise the minimum wage to $15 it is not only the extra hourly wage. A lot of people don't know that whatever is taken out in SS you employer must match dolor for dollar every week. His unemployment tax is based on what he pays in wages and well as his workmans comp insurance. If he has a retirement plan for his employees that also is usually based on wages. Its not just the hourly dollars we're talking here.

Do you believe that a minority teenager, maybe a high school drop out, with very few job skills, has a right to work? Or do you believe that being low skilled, maybe so low-skilled that you can only command $8 or $9 an hour in the job market, means you should have this right taken away? Oddly enough, for the progressive left, those who claim to be the most compassionate in our society, have adopted the latter position. In fact, the position that was adopted by the Democratic Party platform this summer argues that anyone whose skills are so low that they can’t command $15 and hour has no right to gainful employment. They argue that any employer who attempts to hire such a person at a rate that is commensurate with his or her skills will be breaking the law and subject to severe penalties.

 

This is the reality of raising the minimum wage. If you are in favor of a legal hourly minimum wage of $15 you are arguing that a person loses his right to be employed if his skills are not at a level where he can generate at least an equal amount in production for an employer.
