Could Clinton go entire primary cycle without a press conference?

Hillary Clinton is getting called out by her campaign rivals – on both sides of the aisle – for not holding a press conference all year, part of what they maintain is a “scripted” approach by the Democratic presidential front-runner even as she comes close to locking down the nomination.

 

“I think there’s a lot of frustration among the media about her accessibility,” Jeff Weaver, campaign manager for Democratic rival Bernie Sanders, told Fox News on Wednesday.

 

The former secretary of state long has faced accusations of being closed off to the press, and maintains she wants to speak with the media. So far this year, aside from doing interviews, she has engaged reporters from time to time on the trail – the candidate answered some questions from reporters during a stop in Minneapolis in early March and another in Lexington, Ky., last month.

 

But her last substantial press conference was held Dec. 4 in Fort Dodge, Iowa – and even that involved a session with a small group of reporters.

 

That means the Democratic candidate, who nearly has earned enough delegates to clinch the nomination, hasn’t held an event approaching a formal press conference since voting began. With the primary elections mostly wrapping up next Tuesday, Clinton is poised to go the entire season without a formal press conference unless one is scheduled soon.

Half-a-Year: 180 Days Since Last Hillary Press Conference

 

"I've been more transparent than anybody I can think of in public life," Hillary Clinton declared back in March, responding to inquiries about her still-burgeoning email scandal. Her definition of transparency is an unusual one. In addition to refusing to cooperate with the State Department's nonpartisan Inspector General investigation into her rules-violating and national security-compromising email scheme and stubbornly resisting calls to release transcripts of her high-dollar speeches to Wall Street firms, Mrs. Clinton has not held a press conference in six months. As of midnight tonight, 180 days will have come and gone since Clinton -- who is actively seeking the presidency of the United States -- deigned to participate in a so-called 'media avail' at which journalists pepper political candidates and office-holders with questions on subjects of their choosing. That calculation is based on this NBC News report published on February 29, which at the time marked 87 days since Clinton had answered reporters' questions in, appropriately enough, Fort Dodge, Iowa.

On Wednesday’s CBS This Morning, correspondent Nancy Cordes agreed with Donald Trump’s criticism of Hillary Clinton over her refusal to hold press conferences: “...those of us who cover the Hillary Clinton campaign would love to have a press conference, even if she insulted us. You know, she hasn't done one for months and months, which is something that Donald Trump himself noted.”

 

Co-host Charlie Rose wondered: “Why not?” Cordes declared: “She's just, you know, not that comfortable in that setting....She's not interested in getting the tough questions out there on the trail, lots of people shouting at her. That's not her milieu, while Donald Trump is comfortable with that.”

 

 

Hillary is just not comfortable with answering questions, so the press says that's OK....
