Chicago Public Schools to Allow Transgender Students, Employees to Choose Bathrooms Based on ‘Gender Identity’

CHICAGO (TheBlaze/AP) — Chicago Public Schools will allow transgender students and employees to use bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identities, according to guidelines released Tuesday by the nation’s third-largest school district.

 

“Students shall have access to the restrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity consistently asserted at school,” the guidelines read. “Supports and accommodations should also be provided to gender non-binary students and students questioning their gender identity, regardless of whether the student is consistently asserting at school.”

 

Another set of guidelines were released for employees who identify as transgender.

 

“Individuals and employees shall have access to restrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identity. Any individual who has a need or desire for increased privacy, regardless of the underlying reason, shall be provided access to a single-stall restroom, when available,” those guidelines state.

 

The policy, which also applies to “gender non-conforming students,” covers all education opportunities, including overnight field trips, and allows for alternative arrangements if requested, such as a single-stall restroom or separate changing schedule.

 

“CPS, like much of the country, has become far more aware of the needs and experiences of the transgender community, and it’s crucial for CPS guidelines to reflect our commitment to promoting safe and inclusive schools,” district Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson said in a statement.
