‘PANAMA PAPERS’ IMPLICATE CLIENT OF CLINTON-LINKED LOBBYING FIRM

A firm with ties to senior members of the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign registered to lobby on behalf of a major Russian bank just weeks before a massive leak exposed the bank’s role in a web of secret financial dealings that have enriched members of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

 

The “Panama Papers” are being called “the Wikileaks of the mega-rich.” Corporate documents leaked from the law firm Mossack Fonseca show how world leaders have used offshore tax havens to hide their involvement in lucrative companies and business deals around the world.

 

Among those companies is the Russian Sberbank, whose U.S. investment banking branch recently enlisted the services of the Podesta Group. According to its lobbying registration form, the firm will work on banking, trade, and foreign relations issues.

Panama Papers: The Elites’ Shield From Laws Imposed On Us

 

Elites: With the release of the Panama Papers Sunday, it’s increasingly clear that the global elites in politics, business and sports have two sets of rules — one for them, and one for the rest of us.

 

Stolen from Mossack Fonseca, a Panamanian law firm that specializes in setting up shell companies, some 11.5 million documents showing the involvement of 72 world leaders and “power players” were released Sunday by a nonprofit news group sponsored by the Center for Public Integrity called the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. The group worked with the BBC, the Guardian and other news agencies.

 

This time, nearly all the well-marketed news logos of the “Panama Papers” including ICIJ’s featured images of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, along with information about his supposed fortune that was already known from a book called “Putin’s Kleptocracy” by Karen Dawisha.

 

The Kremlin has openly accused the organization of a political agenda, and with George Soros a major bankroller of the consortium, they may have a point. Soros has openly feuded with Putin over his foundation’s activities in Russia and now there’s a Russian election in the works. What’s more, no one from the U.S. has been named, raising questions on Twitter and elsewhere as to whether the news consortium is protecting Soros’ preferred presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, whose foundation activities have already raised eyebrows for nontransparent financing.

Panama Papers probes opened, China limits access to news on leaks

Authorities across the globe have opened investigations into the activities of the world's rich and powerful after a cache of leaked documents from a Panamanian law firm showed possible wrongdoing using offshore company structures.

The "Panama Papers" have cast light on the financial arrangements of high profile politicians and public figures and the companies and financial institutions they use for such activities. Among those named in the documents are friends of Russian President Vladimir Putin and relatives of the leaders of China, Britain, Iceland and Pakistan, and the president of Ukraine.

Leading figures and financial institutions responded to the massive leak of more than 11.5 million documents with denials of any wrongdoing as prosecutors and regulators began a review of the reports from the investigation by the U.S.-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and other media organizations.

Following the reports, China has moved to limit local access to coverage of the matter with state media denouncing Western reporting on the leak as biased against non-Western leaders.
