What It Takes to Stop Islamic Terror

We have become so inured to suicide bombings that the fact that at least one of the Brussels attackers — the one who hit the airport — sacrificed his own life to kill others can easily get lost in the overall horror of the attacks.

The domestic component is to address the homegrown roots of jihad. Belgium, for one, has become a hotbed of Islamic extremism. Only about 6 percent of the population is Muslim, but Belgium has sent 300-400 fighters to join ISIS in Iraq and Syria — the largest number of any European country. The Paris attacks last November, which were planned in Belgium, represented a belated and still inadequate wakeup call for Belgian authorities that they had to do something to address this threat. Unfortunately, the official response — sending anti-terrorist squads to bang down doors and drag out young Muslim men for interrogation — has plainly proved inadequate. It may even have backfired by engendering even greater hostility toward the state among Muslims who were already on the fringes of society. As one Belgian Muslim told CNN: “This has only filled us with hate.”

This should serve as a warning to fans of Donald Trump who think his get-tough approach to Muslims — he claims that “Islam hates us,” he wants to bar all Muslims from entering the U.S., and he wants to use torture “worse than waterboarding” — will solve the problem of terrorism. Such heavy-handed measures are more likely to backfire. What would prove more effective, but much harder to implement, would be for Belgium, France, and other European states to do a much better job of assimilating Muslim immigrants. The U.S. has more success in this regard, which is part of the reason why we face less of a terrorist threat — but now our success is endangered by Trump’s cynical hate-mongering.

No matter how successful domestic counter-terrorism efforts are, they will never suffice so long as the Islamic State continues to flourish and exert a powerful attraction to a small minority of Muslims from around the world. Thus, we come to the second plank of a successful counter-terrorist strategy: It is imperative for all countries that are worried about the threat of ISIS-inspired terrorism — which is to say, all countries with a substantial Muslim population — to band together to destroy the Islamic State. There is simply no other way to end the allure of ISIS for would-be terrorists. The West and even moderate Muslim nations cannot effectively counter ISIS’s highly effective propaganda as long as it is rooted in the reality that the Islamic State continues to exist and to implement a medieval brand of Islam in the face of unrelenting attacks from its enemies.

Disagree with most of his suggestions. In 14 centuries, the only defeat that militant Islam has seen, is due to overwhelming force. "Only" 15-20% of Muslims may be militant, but the other 80% is either cowed into submission, or accepting of the tenet of war until all submit to Allah. The maybe 2-5% that speak against this mayhem, target themselves. Why, oh why, would we expect them to assimilate? If they assimilate, they become targets...and become neutered by threat of death or injury. This is a war of civilizations...one still in the year 700AD & one trying to make it's way in the 22nd century. I noticed the percentage of Belgian Muslims at 6%, right over the critical threshold of 5%, when native populations can expect to be injured, killed or submit to Allah.

This is a load of crapola.

They can hate us just as well from some sandy sh*thole, as living a few blocks away. Why do we have to coax them to assimilate? The formula is: You want to live here? You assimilate. You don't want to assimilate? Stay where you are. Anything else has no bearing in reality. Borders make a country. Countries have a right to accept the type of immigrant that they need, and or, want. Pulling 7th century individuals & making them citizens is a recipe for disaster and insanity. Eurostan is what America would be without an ocean & a half-assed attempt at security.

There are stupid people in Brussels.

@Valin! Surprisingly...I agree with you. I take what Europeans say about the American Presidential race with the singular salt grain it requires...but he does live in the EU capital & his fear of Islam's tender mercies deserves some respect. God help us if we ever reach a 5% Muslim population. I mean that in the nicest way possible. They shouldn't go away mad...just go away.

I'm proud of the Egyptians! They told Oblunder & his Springtime for Hitler Muslim Brotherhood buddies to pound sand...something which they have plenty of...

I know you read a lot. You dissect cerebrally, the exact formula for living in peace with 8th century savages. It just doesn't translate to reality at times.

Americans...despite what Oblunder & Progressives fervently have tried to bring about...do not have to accept people whose entire mind-set still resides in the 8th century. We do not have to accept people from a failed narco-terrorist state. We have been indoctrinated & bamboozled into thinking that we have no control of our immigration...by the wet dreams of deluded One World Order elites that have a different agenda for total control. Insidious politico's & their regulatory troops that desire American's to assume the cowed serfdom that is being enforced right now in Eurostan. The solution? Who knows? I'm too old to bend a knee...but still smart enough to see that with 200 million firearms & 12 trillion rounds of ammo in private hands...it ain't gonna happen here.

See...that's the difference between America & Europe.

We are in one of the "Box" stages: Soap, Ballot, Jury or Ammo.

Europe is reaping decades of neglect....and PC.

...and insane immigration...without significant border control...

If the native population is graying & refuses to get with the One World Order...replace 'em! The problem comes when these hardy immigrants can't be controlled by the native elitists anymore. By that time it's no longer your native country.
