An infection was spreading across parts of Wisconsin, affecting dozens of people with little clear overlap. So far, 18 of these patients have died, though it is unclear if the infection was to blame. More than four months later, federal and state authorities are still trying to figure out where the infections are coming from, and investigators remain baffled. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services said that as of Wednesday, it had been informed of 48 people infected with a bacteria called Elizabethkingia since last November.
