Sixteen people were killed, including nine Doctors Without Borders staff members and seven patients, and another 37 wounded after a suspected U.S. airstrike early Saturday near the organization's hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan.

"We are deeply shocked by the attack, the killing of our staff and patients and the heavy toll it has inflicted in Kunduz," Doctors Without Borders director of operations Bart Janssens said in a statement.

The organization said the hospital was hit several times during "sustained bombing" starting at 2:10 a.m. Saturday and was "very badly damaged." Scissors-32x32.png
