U.S. MARINES STOP TERROR ATTACK ON AMSTERDAM-PARIS TRAIN; AMERICAN SERIOUSLY INJURED

A gunman who opened fire on a train in northern France Friday was restrained by two U.S. Marines before he could do any further damage, according to initial reports of the incident.

 

At least two victims have serious injuries, and another suffered multiple gunshot wounds, a spokesman for the SNCF (National Society of French Railways) said Friday.

 

Reports stated that the man was carrying multiple weapons, including an AK47 automatic rifle, and was of North African origin. A police official told French television channel i-Tele that the suspect is a 26-year-old Moroccan national named Sliman Hamzi, the Telegraph reports.

 

The two seriously injured victims are American and British nationals, initial reports stated. One was injured due to a gunshot wound, and the other sustained a stabbing injury.

 

A French actor, Jean-Hughes Anglade, who was also injured in the attack, is being credited with sounding an alarm on the train.

 

“The situation is under control, the travelers are safe. The train stopped and the emergency services are on site,” the high-speed train operator, Thalys, said on its Twitter page.

A group of unarmed US Marines on board a high-speed train between Amsterdam and Paris foiled a terrorist attack after a gunman opened fire with an assault rifle, wounding three people.

 

 

The 26-year-old Moroccan national, who was known to security services, came out of the toilet brandishing the gun and opened fire. Fortunately, two US Marines were nearby and overpowered him before he could massacre passengers.

 

 

The suspected terrorist had at least nine full magazines of ammunition holding almost 300 rounds. He was also carrying a knife.

 

 

Unfortunately, one of the Marines was shot and is believed to be in a critical condition.

I wrote yesterday about the U.S. servicemen who foiled a terrorist attack by a Moroccan Muslim who had been trained in Syria, aboard a Paris to Amsterdam train. As always, initial accounts of such an incident are confused and, at least in details, contradictory. In this case, though, it turns out that they were correct in substance–although the servicemen, called Marines last night, are being described this way this morning:

The New York Post has an account by one of the participants that tells us what really happened:

 

 

Two off-duty members of the US military prevented a massacre Friday by overpowering a rifle-wielding madman after he opened fire aboard a high-speed train in France, wounding three people.

 

The gunman, identified by authorities as Moroccan national Sliman Hamzi, is a known Islamic militant, CNN reported, quoting a senior ­European anti-terrorism official.

 

The gunfire took place in the rear car of the Paris to Amsterdam express. Three people were shot, including one of the Americans, who was seriously wounded but expected to survive. A friend of the heroes, Anthony Sadler, also was aboard the train and saw what happened. He identified them as Spencer Stone, of Sacramento, who was injured and Alek Skarlatos of Roseburg, Ore., who was unhurt.
