(CNN)Noelle Velentzas, 28, could not understand why U.S. citizens like her were traveling overseas to wage jihad when they could simply stay and "make history" by unleashing terrorist attacks on American soil, according to a federal criminal complaint unsealed Thursday.

Velentzas and her former roommate Asia Siddiqui, 31, also a U.S. citizen, were arrested and accused of planning to build an explosive device for attacks in the United States, federal prosecutors said.

The complaint paints a picture of a disturbing trend in homegrown violent extremism.

Feds nab Philadelphia woman who allegedly planned to become ISIS martyr

4/3/15

A Philadelphia woman who told an ISIS fighter that dying for the terrorist organization would be "amazing" was arrested last week before she could depart for the Middle East, federal authorities announced Friday, a day after disclosing the arrests of two New York women who allegedly plotted to set off pressure cooker bombs on American soil.

Keonna Thomas, 30, who also went by the names Fatayat Al Khilafah and YoungLioness, had purchased a visa allowing entry to Turkey and had an airline ticket for Spain for March 29 when she was nabbed, authorities said. Officials believe she planned to make her way from Spain to Turkey, then to Syria to join ISIS.

“If we truly knew the realities . . . we all would be rushing to join our brothers in the front lines pray ALLAH accept us as shuhada [martyrs],” Thomas allegedly tweeted before deactivating her Twitter account so as not "to draw attention of the kuffar [non-believers].”

Third Uzbek Man Charged In New York With Aiding IS

April 07, 2015

An Uzbek national has been arrested and charged in New York in connection with an alleged plot by a group of Central Asian men to support the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria. The defendant, 26-year-old Dilkhayot Kasimov, is an Uzbek citizen living in Brooklyn.

Kasimov was named alongside two other Uzbeks and a Kazakh national in a revised indictment on April 6. The Uzbek man will be formally arraigned in federal court in Brooklyn on April 8, according to Reuters. The three other defendants are 24-year-old Abdulrasul Hasanovich Juraboev and 30-year-old Abror Habibov, both from Uzbekistan; and 19-year-old Akhror Saidakhmetov from Kazakhstan.

Juraboev allegedly posted a message on the Uzbek site saying that he was in the United States and unarmed and asking if it were possible for him and his associates to "commit ourselves as dedicated martyrs anyway while here? What I'm saying is, to shoot [u.S. President Barack] Obama and then get shot ourselves, will it do?"

Saidakhmetov is also alleged to have described a plot to purchase an AK-47 rifle and use it to shoot police officers, if he was not able to carry out his plans to fight alongside IS militants in Syria.

Saidakhmetov, Juraboev and Habibov have all pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.
