Valin
CNN: Evan Perez and Shimon Prokupecz, CNN Updated 3:53 PM ET, Fri March 6, 2015 Washington (CNN)The Justice Department is preparing to bring criminal corruption charges against New Jersey Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat, alleging he used his Senate office to push the business interests of a Democratic donor and friend in exchange for gifts. People briefed on the case say Attorney General Eric Holder has signed off on prosecutors' request to proceed with charges, CNN has learned exclusively. An announcement could come within weeks. Prosecutors are under pressure in part because of the statute of limitation on some of the allegations. The case could pose a high-profile test of the Justice Department's ability to prosecute sitting lawmakers, having already spawned a legal battle over whether key evidence the government has gathered is protected by the Constitution's Speech and Debate clause. Valin
5 things about Sen. Robert Menendez Bob Jordan March 6, 2015 1. Sen. Robert Menendez was not an early supporter of Barack Obama The reported recent heated exchange on Iran policy between Menendez and Obama was only their latest brush. In June 2007 Menendez endorsed Hillary Clinton's presidential bid and was made co-chair of her national campaign. (Snip) 4. Menendez clashed with his political mentor Menendez early in his career was an aide to Union City Mayor William Musto. When Musto faced federal corruption charges, Menendez testified against him. Later Menendez challenged him for mayor. 5. If Menendez has to call it quits, who will be tapped as the temporary replacement for his Senate seat? State Sen. Joe Kyrillos, R-Monmouth, lost in a challenge to Menendez in the 2012 election. It would be up to Republican Gov. Chris Christie, a close friend of Kyrillos, to pick a temporary replacement if one is needed. "My iPhone has been lighting up like a Christmas tree'' Kyrillos said a couple of hours after news broke of Menendez' problems. Kyrillos said if Menendez is guilty of what's alleged, it would be "another sorry chapter for New Jersey and the country.''
