Walmart lawsuit highlights Texas' surprising alcohol laws

Matt Levin, Houston Chronicle | February 16, 2015

The world’s biggest retailer will take Texas to court over one of the state’s peculiar liquor laws. Walmart is suing Texas for violating its constitutional right to sell hard liquor.

Texas bans publicly-traded companies with more than 35 shareholders from selling hard liquor, the AP reports. The complaint calls the law “irrational, unnecessary and unfair” and “harmful to Texas and to Walmart’s profits.” Furthermore, a company or person cannot hold more than five liquor store permits in Texas. Walmart is wasting its money. There are states in the east that won't allow anybody but the state to sell hard liquor. Isn't Texas still dry by county? When I lived there around 1980 the county I was in was dry.
