Did Brian Williams lie about his Katrina experience, too?

NBC News anchor Brian Williams is in quite a bit of trouble over his admission that his decade-long claim to have endured heavy fire while flying in a military helicopter over Baghdad in 2003 was a fabrication. Accordingly, journalists are beginning to review other extraordinary claims Williams made over the course of his career, and they are not short on material to parse.

The team over at Ace of Spades flagged an interesting moment from a 2006 interview in which Williams waxed regretful about the devastating flooding in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Reporting from The Times-Picayune, Fox News, and The New York Times all state clearly that the French Quarter was not flooded in the same way that other areas of the city, like the Lower Ninth Ward, were inundated.

Even during the height of the crisis, The Times described the French Quarter as an “oasis of wary calm” amid an escalating crisis. “Outside, the Quarter’s elegant 150-year-old buildings look relatively unruffled, except for some loosened bricks, having been spared the worst of Hurricane Katrina’s winds and sitting high enough to have avoided the flooding,” the report read.

There comes a time when the mockery of a public figure becomes a gratuitous pile-on and needs to stop. This is not that time. #BrianWilliams

If you are a big time public figure you just can't do this! I mean there is a real difference between what Brian Williams did and a bunch of old vets sitting around the VFW hall swappin War Stories..."There I Was!!" The question is, why did it take so long?

NBC launches investigation of Brian Williams
Roger Yu, USA TODAY 4:27 p.m. EST February 6, 2015

NBC News confirmed Friday that it's investigating chief anchor Brian Williams over his now-retracted statement that he was in a helicopter in Iraq that was hit by enemy fire and forced to land.

"This has been a difficult few days for all of us at NBC News," NBC News President Deborah Turness said in a staff memo circulated Friday. "Yesterday, Brian and I spoke to the Nightly News team. And this morning at the Editorial Exchange, we both addressed the wider group. Brian apologized once again, and specifically expressed how sorry he is for the impact this has had on all of you and on this proud organization.

"As you would expect, we have a team dedicated to gathering the facts to help us make sense of all that has transpired. We're working on what the best next steps are – and when we have something to communicate we will of course share it with you," she said.

The internal probe is being led by Richard Esposito, who heads the network's investigative unit and was formerly an editor at The Daily News of New York, according to The Daily News. The Daily News was the first news outlet to disclose the NBC investigation.

Brian’s big fog

On FNC’s Kelly File last night Megyn Kelly interviewed Stars and Stripes reporter Travis Tritten about NBC News anchor Brian Williams’s tall tales (video below). The interview proceeds methodically to trace Williams’s adornments and refinements to a tall tale he has been telling for more than ten years, capped off by a mendacious apology attributing his fabrications to the “fog of memory.” Kelly pierces the fog with this lucid interview.

Among those familiar with the story Williams has become a laughingstock. Creative types on Twitter have disseminated a multitude of images depicting previously overlooked episodes in Williams’s heroic career. The Los Angeles Times’s Ryan Parker collects several here. There are so many good ones out there it’s hard to pick a favorite....(Snip)

NBC's Brian Williams takes himself off air amid Iraq and Katrina controversy

NBC news anchor Brian Williams will step off air while the network continues its investigation into inaccuracies in his reporting, he announced on Saturday.

Williams has come under pressure after veterans questioned his account of an incident involving two US helicopters that came under fire in Iraq in 2003. His reporting from New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was subsequently called into question.

brian-williams-to-take-leave-from-nbc-nightly-news.html?_r=0NY Times:

Brian Williams, acknowledging that the scrutiny and criticism he was attracting was becoming a distraction for his network, said on Saturday that he was stepping aside as anchor of NBC’s “Nightly News” for the next several days.

In a memo to the NBC News staff, Mr. Williams said that Lester Holt, the anchor for “Dateline,” would step in as the network dealt with the crisis caused by Mr. Williams’s admission that he had misled the public with an account of a helicopter incident in Iraq.

“In the midst of a career spent covering and consuming news, it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions,” Mr. Williams said in the two-paragraph memo.

Mr. Williams is both anchor and managing editor for “NBC Nightly News.”
