Valin
Financial Post: Lawrence Solomon January 23, 2015 It read like satire that might have come from the latest edition of Charlie Hebdo, the French journal that paid in blood for offending Muslims by portraying an image of the Prophet Mohammed. “The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honour of Paris has been prejudiced,” said Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, outraged that Fox News had offended her city by describing it as dangerous. “We’ll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed.” But Hidalgo was dead serious, even though days earlier she was in the front lines of the now-iconic “I am Charlie” rally that affirmed the right of Charlie Hebdo journalists — and journalists everywhere — to exercise free speech. The irony, and the farce, go much further. Fox drew Hidalgo’s ire for saying that France in general and Paris in particular have numerous Muslim-run “no-go zones” that the police fear to enter. Fox did say that, but why would Hidalgo limit her suit to Fox? She could also sue Valeurs Actuelles, a major weekly newsmagazine, that warned against venturing into the Paris suburb of Trappes. “You will be spotted … and be stripped and smashed,” it quoted Mohammed Duhan, a local police official in a story about Islamic fundamentalists imposing an alternative society.
