Valin
AEIdeas: Michael Rubin January 20, 2015 As a candidate, Barack Obama pledged to be the most transparent president ever, but even his supporters say he hasn’t lived up to that promise. Over at Commentary, I look at perhaps the most important document—at least for American national security—that remains shrouded in the shadows, that is the 9/11 Joint Congressional Inquiry. The George W. Bush administration redacted 28 pages of the report, apparently out of diplomatic deference to Saudi Arabia. President Obama has kept those pages secret, although congressmen from both sides of the aisle who have read those pages have said they don’t betray sources and methods, and former Senator Bob Graham has been leading the charge to get those 28 pages released. Enough time has passed that even shielding Saudi Arabia (or other states) from diplomatic embarrassment should not be reason to keep those pages secret. Since 9/11, both Saudi Arabia and the United States have changed leaders, we have 35 million more Americans today than on that fateful day, and 74 senators serving today were not yet in the Senate on 9/11.
