DURHAM, N.C. -

Duke University has canceled its plans to have a Muslim prayer announcement broadcast from Duke Chapel's belltower on Friday afternoons.

The university announced its plans to facilitate a weekly call to prayer; but on Thursday, Duke officials acknowledged the decision resulted in unintended backlash.

"Duke remains committed to fostering an inclusive, tolerant and welcoming campus for all of its students," said Michael Schoenfeld, vice president for public affairs and government relations. "However, it was clear that what was conceived as an effort to unify was not having the intended effect."

The initial plan was to broadcast a weekly call to prayer from the chapel's bell tower starting Jan. 16. The prayer service would then take place in the chapel basement.

Hmmmm...... A step in the right for the Duke academic elite.

Now how about letting Chic Fil A back on campus.

As far as I remember... They've only beheaded chickens.

Doncha love this retort to Franklin Graham:

Omid Safi, director of Duke’s Islamic Studies Center, had a few choice words for Graham during an interview with HuffPost Live.

Every day from that same Duke chapel, church bells ring, and twice on Sunday. The cross is on the emblem of Duke University. The entire quad, and the entire campus of Duke University is laid out as a cross. And the Christian chapel is the very symbol of Duke University. So the kind of fanatical proclamation that Christianity is being erased from Duke’s campus is frankly a poor indication of the intelligence of that argument

I would ask Omid, what that has to do with the price of tea in China?

Why don’t they build a Duke University Mosque instead? Then they can broadcast Christmas carols from it.

Great idea... then they can have lesbian ministers give interdenominational sermons between Asr and Maghrib.

Our local (usually pretty balanced and moderate) WRAL has this article:

http://www.wral.com/duke-reverses-plan-to-allow-islamic-call-to-prayer-from-campus-chapel/14359650/

First Note the Headline:

Security threat nixes Islamic prayer call from Duke Chapel
Then in the article:

"You're taking that bell tower, and you're turning it into a Muslim minaret," he said. "I think it's a slap at the Christian faith." (Franklin Graham)

"In majority-Muslim countries across the globe, the adhan is broadcast from mosques and on television and radio stations five times a day to correspond with prayer times. On Fridays, the day of worship in Islam, sermons are also broadcast.

In the United States, amplified adhan exists in a handful of communities.

Khalilah Sabra, executive director of the Muslim American Society in Raleigh, called Duke's reversal "a terrible shame," saying it's unfair for Graham and others to blame all Muslims for the violent acts of a few.

"Duke took a coward's way out and cannot pretend to be advocates of diversity. This was primarily because it caved into the fallout nourished by racism," Sabra said in an email to WRAL News. "A huge gap could have been bridged; now it may remain broken."

Graham applauded Duke's choice not to allow the Islamic call to prayer from the bell tower, calling it "the right decision.

Political correctness run amok in a "post Christian" world of vacuous, ego centrist hypocritical "thinking" in so many comments and quotes that one reads these days. Not to mention how headlines often tweak an agenda.

Witness the latest editorial tweak found on Ben Carson - first I read the headline and article on msn news then on a google search for that link saw all these other links:

OK you get the idea.

So what did he say:

STEVE PEOPLES,

(AP) — Republican presidential prospect Ben Carson on Thursday compared the Islamic State group to American patriots willing to die for freedom.

In a speech to the Republican National Committee's winter meeting outside San Diego, the former neurosurgeon and conservative favorite praised American patriots for their willingness to give their lives for their beliefs. Then he mentioned the Islamic State group.

"They got the wrong philosophy, but they're willing to die for what they believe, while we are busily giving away every belief and every value for the sake of political correctness," he said as Republican officials from across the country interrupted him with applause. "We have to change that."

The entire article is a slam at Carson -and conservatives. Read it here (one among many places):

Does Duke receive public funding? If so take a page out of the ACLU handbook. BTW were are our good friends at the Freedom From Religion Foundation?

I doubt it. It is one of the most heavily endowed and expensive private Universities in the world. It is also in the top10 in reputation for academic offerings. The Medical School (and hospital) are world renowned. The Divinity School gives us many of our Methodist ministers.
