WASHINGTON – President Obama on Thursday proposed making community college free for all Americans who are "willing to work for it," though the administration has not revealed the price tag or how exactly it would be paid for.

In a video posted on Facebook, the president previewed his plan, which will be formally announced during a trip to Tennessee Friday. The president said he wants to provide free community college for two years, by covering enough tuition to get students who keep their grades up an associate's degree or halfway to a bachelor's.

"It's not for kids," Obama said. "We also have to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages, better benefits."

On a conference call with reporters, however, administration officials were vague on the details.

I had a nephew on FB extolling how great this is and that all higher education should be freerolleyes.gif The articles about this say that congress would have to approve this, but you are right, it has not stopped him before.

This is still progressive wealth redistribution. It matters not what the program is....the effect of removing assets from their citizens is what is most important....along with fomenting chaos & "change."

We'll pay for it with this:

In truth, it was a plan of Obama's first administration, to issue platinum coins, in 1 trillion dollar denominations, and keep them in the Treasury, to use as collateral for their spending. Instead they've used executive orders, memorandum, regulatory reparations [Pigford & EBT] and repetitive "quantitative easing" or paper currency debauchery, to accomplish the same goal.

Obama Proposes Two “Free” Years of Community College, Taxpayer-Funded

Written by Raven Clabough

President Obama proposed Thursday making two years of community college free for all students. Although his plan does not have an official cost established yet, White House officials estimate that the price tag for taxpayers will be "significant."

In order to qualify under Obama’s plan, students at any age must have at least a C+ average and attend school at least half-time and be considered to be making “steady progress” toward their degrees.

The president is proposing that federal funding cover three-quarters of the cost and that the states pay the rest. Of course, there is no authorization in the Constitution for the federal government to fund community college education. But there is also no constitutional authorization for the federal government to fund elementary or secondary education and this has not stopped the federal government from doing it. Just 20 percent of community college first-years complete their program within three years.

Why Free Community College Is Anything But Free

By Heritage Foundation Lindsey Burke January 9, 2015

The Obama administration announced Thursday that it will propose two years of “free” community college, paid for by taxpayers, for students maintaining a “C” or better average. The federal government would finance three-quarters of the costs, and the administration says it hopes the remainder would be financed by states. Scissors-32x32.png

Obama's Free Community College Proposal Is Ridiculous

By Michael Filozof

As someone who has spent over 15 years teaching at community colleges, I cannot think of a worse idea than President Obama’s proposal for the federal government to provide “free” community college tuition nationwide.

Here’s why:

Nothing in life is “free”: The lesson we should be teaching our students is that nothing of value is free. “Freecommunity college” for students translates into “a tax increase for somebody else.” Who is going to pay for the billions of dollars it will cost to provide “free” tuition at community colleges, which are heavily subsidized by taxpayers already? College should be affordable, but students need to responsibly shoulder most of the cost.

The federal government has no business in education: Article 1, Sec. 8 of the Constitution enumerates the powers of the federal government. Scissors-32x32.png
