Sydney siege: Hostages held in central cafe

Several people have been taken hostage by at least one armed man at a Lindt cafe in the centre of Sydney.

Hundreds of armed police have sealed off the normally busy Martin Place in Sydney's central business district.

 

At least three people have been seen inside the cafe with their hands up against a window, and holding up a black flag with Arabic writing.

 

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has described the incident as "deeply concerning".

He said it was not yet clear who was behind the incident but that it could be politically motivated.

1. It's idiotic the back flips so many officials and news blokes have been doing to deny the implications of Jihadi efforts and the complicity of Islam generally in them.

2. The contention routinely is that it's a 'minority' of 'extremists.' In key respects, that's nonsense. Read the founding documents of Islam. Read the history. Read Muhammed's words. There's ABUNDANT exhortations there for just such efforts and worse.

3. Solid research has indicated that at a minimum, in Islamic countries, 20% of the general populace supports violent Jihad, murder of non-Muslims etc. And in some countries, it's as high as 70%. Even 20% of a billion people is a significant problem that won't go away by ignorant platitudes and shallow stupid blather. Support has been defined as providing money, safe houses, assistance etc. with activities of violent jihad.

At the same time, such events MUST be a function--directly or indirectly--of globalist strategies to shred the current world order down literally to smoldering ashes so that establishment of the literally demonic, satanic NEW WORLD ORDER will be all the easier to set up on the world stage MORE OVERTLY and more comprehensively. It is no stray accident that such events occur.

5. Such events are either micro-managed and scheduled deliberately from the upper halls of the shadow global government and/or they are 'incidental' events resulting from foundational stages and strategies set up by such globalist forces, personnel, strategies and structures.

I wonder if this person is aware that the vast majority of those killed by the Jihadis are in fact Muslims? (As I have said many times) What we are seeing is a war inside Islam.

The hostage taking in Australia is over now, and the name of the hostage-taker has been released. He was an Iranian-born Islamic cleric named Man Monis, aka Shiekh Haron.

 

If the past is any guide, Monis will be described as a “lone wolf” terrorist because, as far as we know, he acted on his own, not on orders from a terrorist organization.

 

But Patrick Poole of PJ Media argues that Monis is better described as a “known wolf” terrorist. Why? Because authorities had good reason to know of the danger he posed.

Can we expect better in America? I don’t think so. According to Poole, virtually all incidents of domestic terrorism in the U.S. have been perpetrated by “known wolves.” Poole provides a long list of them. It includes Boston Marathon bombers, the underwear bomber, and the Fort Hood killer.

 

Political correctness plagues America, just as it apparently plagues Australia. And here, as there, it is a serious impediment to protecting citizens from terrorism.

The perpetrator was not a jihadist but a criminal described by his own lawyer as "damaged goods"

If the location of the Sydney siege — images of which flashed around the world for 16 hours before two hostages and a gunman were killed — appeared familiar, it’s because Martin Place is a popular international film set. Superman Returns and the Matrix trilogy were filmed in the pedestrianized, central Sydney precinct, lined with colonial-era buildings that are the headquarters of Australia’s largest financial institutions, law firms and broadcasters as well as high-end retailers like Brooks Brothers and the Lindt Chocolat Café, where the tragedy took place.

 

What is absolutely alien, on the other hand, is that nature of a man like the 50-year-old Iranian-born perpetrator, Man Haron Monis. There is no point in trying to place him, as some have attempted, in an overarching discourse of Islamist terrorism and history, because he was plainly not a terrorist but a mentally disturbed individual and serial sex offender. Neither is it helpful to describe this tragedy — as media mogul Rupert Murdoch did — as a “wake-up call” for the nation, because, from the Port Arthur massacre to the Bali bombings, Australia has had plenty of those already.

 

To be sure, Monis lost a final appeal in the High Court to overturn a conviction he had received for sending hate mail to the widows of Australian troops killed in Afghanistan. So much, so jihadist. But he was also a pervert (facing 40 charges of sexual assault) and accused of being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife. That makes him more criminal than terrorist. As everyone now knows, he couldn’t even get his props right: the black flag he forced his hostages to hold in the window of the café was not the emblem of the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) but a plain and simple shahada — a common Muslim inscription that says “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” Unable to furnish his own, Monis had to demand an ISIS flag from the authorities in exchange for a hostage. He never got it.

New Year's Eve preparations under way after Tony Abbott's terrorism warning

 

NSW police and event co-ordinators are working to step up security preparations for the Sydney New Year's Eve celebrations after the Prime Minister terrorism warning on Tuesday.

 

Mr Abbott said the "heightened level of terror chatter" in the wake of the Martin Place siege had convinced intelligence officials and the National Security Committee a terror attack was "likely".

 

"We do need to be conscious of the fact that the terror threat remains high. There are people who would do us harm and who can do us harm," Mr Abbott said on Christmas Eve.
