In the wake of the 2012 presidential election, it wasn't hard to find a pundit or political analyst issuing grim forecasts for the Republican Party, some of which look fairly ridiculous in hindsight.

Political consultant Robert Shrum claimed that the "crabbed, plutocratic, intolerant" Republicans were on the losing side of "an authentic and accelerating realignment in the demography, ideology and political identity of the American mainstream."

BuzzFeed editor in chief Ben Smith predicted, "The Republican party will spend much needed time in the wilderness after this election."

"The future of the Grand Old Party," he went on, "will be determined by how well it adapts to the brand new Liberal America — indeed the Obama America — that is now here to stay."

Prominent blogger and commentator James Joyner declared that the U.S. was "not a center-right nation any more" and that "the only question is how many more elections they'll lose clinging to a 'traditional America' that's a distant memory."Scissors-32x32.png
