Four suburban Chicago firefighters say they were suspended after refusing to remove American flags and military stickers from their helmets and lockers.

Tensions reportedly started when Maywood Fire Chief Craig Bronaugh ordered an American flag to be removed from the inside of Fire Station 2. It was a new flag the firefighters had bought to replace the tattered one that was there before, WGN-TV reported.

The firefighters say they weren’t given an explanation as to why their new flag was removed, so they put American flags on their lockers instead.

That’s when Chief Bronaugh banned all decals and stickers from lockers and helmets, citing a culture of racism within the department, WGN reported.Scissors-32x32.png
