Robert Gene Garza, Texas Death Row Inmate and a worthless, sick animal

  • Thug: Robert Gene Garza (20 at time of offense)
  • Date of Execution: September 19, 2013
  • Date of Crime: September 5, 2002
  • Victim(s): Maria De La Luz Bazaldua Cobarrubias, Danitzene Lizeth Vasquez Beltran, Celina Linares Sanchez and Lourdes Yesenia Araujo Torres
  • Last Meal: In a recent video, Garza seems to think he’s getting ice cream as part of his specially-requested last meal. But, Texas no longer allows the condemned a special-request last meal. Instead they are served whatever dreck the rest of the animals are being served at the prison that day.
  • Final Words: TBD

Robert Garza is exactly the reason we need the death penalty. Here we have a man so evil, with such little regard for life, willing to kill people he doesn’t even know simply because someone else told him to do so.

Garza, a member of the Tri-City Bombers gang in South Texas, was identified as the trigger man in an infamous gang-related shoot-out called the Edinburg Massacre, which left six rival gang members dead on January 5, 2003. The victims were Jimmy Edward Almendariz, 22; brothers Jerry Eugene Hidalgo, 24, and Ray Hidalgo, 30; half brothers Juan Delgado Jr., 32, and Juan Delgado III, 20; and Ruben Rolando Castillo, 32 – all died of multiple gunshot wounds.

But the murder of 6 other gang-bangers isn’t even why Garza is going to die tomorrow evening; he’s being put to death for his role in the murder of four women the year before.

Evidence showed that Garza fired at least 50 bullets into a car, killing the women who were illegal immigrants from Mexico working at a bar in Donna, a border town southeast of Edinburg. Garza was carrying out a gang-ordered hit on women who had testified against a gang member. Scissors-32x32.png

The Allen B. Polunsky Unit

The Allan B. Polunsky Unit is a prison in West Livingston, located approximately 5 miles southwest of Livingston. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice operates the facility. It was originally the Terrell Unit. The unit houses the State of Texas death row, and it has a maximum capacity of 2,900. Polunsky was named after Allan B. Polunsky, a former chairperson of the Texas Board of Criminal Justice.

The Texas Board unanimously approved giving former Terrell Unit its current name, Allan B. Polunsky Unit, on July 20, 2001. The former namesake, a Dallas insurance executive named Charles Terrell, requested the name change because he did not want his name associated with death row because of questions about the administration of the death penalty. In addition he felt ambivalent about whether the death penalty was a correct deterrent. In exchange the former Ramsey III Unit in was renamed the Terrell Unit.
