CAIRO – Prosecutors opened an investigation of ousted President Mohammed Morsi on charges including murder and conspiracy with the Palestinian militant group Hamas, fueling tensions amid a showdown in the streets, as tens of thousands of backers of the military and supporters of Morsi held rival mass rallies Friday across Egypt.

The announcement, which is likely to pave the way to a formal indictment, was the first word on Morsi's legal status since the military deposed him on July 3. For more than three weeks, the Islamist leader has been held by the military in a secret location, incommunicado.

The accusations are connected to a prison break during the 2011 uprising against autocrat Hosni Mubarak in which gunmen attacked a prison northwest of Cairo, freeing prisoners including Morsi and around 30 other figures from his Muslim Brotherhood. The prosecutors allege Morsi and the Brotherhood worked with Hamas to carry out the break, in which 14 guards were killed.

The Brotherhood has denied the charges, calling them politically motivated. On Friday, a spokesman for Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood said the move to prosecute Morsi showed "the complete bankruptcy of the leaders of the bloody coup."

Egyptians "reject the return of the dictatorial police state and all the repression, tyranny and theft it entails," Ahmed Aref said in a statement.

Heard the one about the law that says the U.S. must cut aid to a country that has had a coup?

Apparently the Barack Obama administration has:

Its lawyers have reportedly told the president he can ignore the law simply by not asking whether Egypt has had a coup.

CAIRO (AP) -- Security forces clashed with supporters of Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi early Saturday, killing at least 38 protesters, the Health Ministry said, in an outburst of violence that put the possibility of political reconciliation in the deeply divided nation ever further out of reach.

Dear Noah

I have a small question....actually several questions

We Cut off aid to Egypt...then what happens? I mean other than you wringing your hands over our lack of influence there.

What about the F-16's we didn't send? Was this the correct thing to do? (Note: many on the Right have taken this as a show of support by Obama for the MB)

As I understand it (granted I am not a licensed certified smart guy like you) Democracy is more than just elections is it not?

This is no time for sissies No Time for Smelling Salts

By Bogdan Kipling (Bio and Archives) Saturday, July 27, 2013

Washington – This is no time for sissies – be they couch potatoes watching what’s going on in Egypt on TV or pyramids of power like President Barack Obama doing his best to give minimal attention to the hinges of history swinging.

At the beginning of July Gen. Abdel Fatah al-Sisi , Egypt’s senior military commander, kicked Mohamed Morsi, Egypt’s elected president, out of office and locked him up just to make sure.

Lilly-livered liberals everywhere got the vapors and reached for smelling salts. Coup, horrible hideous coup, the death of democracy on the Nile they wailed and donned their mourning weeds.

In Cairo, by contrast, the military commander and de facto ruler of the country probably took a swig of Scotch or spiked lemonadeScissors-32x32.png
