Progress in North Carolina

progress-north-carolina-editorsNational Review:

Democrats are terribly upset with Republicans in North Carolina: Having won the state house, the state senate, and the governorship, along with nine of thirteen U.S. House seats in the last election, Republicans in Raleigh are acting like they run the place.

The Republicans’ most controversial piece of legislation is a new voter-identification law, which Democrats are treating as the Second Coming of Jim Crow. Such is the low bar for controversy in the early 21st century: The new law simply requires that voters present a state-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or the similar ID that the state issues to non-drivers. Other forms of identification not subject to the same documentation and security standards — such as student IDs and work IDs — are not acceptable under the new law. It is really something to watch the Democrats treat a trip to the DMV as an unbearable burden: Under Democratic initiatives, everything from a trip to the doctor’s office to opening a business requires or will require running a bureaucratic gauntlet indistinguishable from a trip to the DMV. Such trips are therefore properly regarded as educational: There is nothing that quite so perfectly attunes one’s senses to the ineptitude and hostility of a Democrat-dominated bureaucracy than a visit to the driver’s-license counter. Little wonder the Democrats object.

The absence of state-issued identification is not a bar to voting only — it marginalizes people from much of modern life, restricting their ability to travel or access financial services. If there are really that many in North Carolina who cannot get a state-issued ID, then the solution is to help them to do so.Scissors-32x32.png

The Republican led initiatives have the LIBs here in total melt down.

We've posted about their "Moral Monday" protest at the capitol every week. What a bunch of losers led by the NAACP and the corpulent Rev. Barber, head of the NC NAACP.

From the NAACP site... here's their view of the new initiatives:

Worst-Case Anti-Voting Bill Introduced in the NC Senate TODAY!

Here's a quick summary of the awful scope of the newly proposed version of HB-589:

No more pre-registration for 16 & 17 year olds
Eliminates same day voter registration
Voter can be challenged by any registered voter of the county rather than precinct
Slices a week off Early Voting
Eliminates straight party ticket voting
Sets up a study instead of mandating electronic filing for state legislators
Increase maximum campaign contribution to $5000 instead of $4000
Weakens disclosure requirements for Independent Expenditure committees
Authorizes vigilante poll observers, lots of them, with expanded range of interference
Expands the scope of who may examine registration records and challenge voters
Repeals out-of-precinct provisional voting
Repeals mandate for high-school registration drives
Eliminates flexibility in opening EV sites at different hours within a county
Makes it more difficult to add satellite polling sites for elderly or voters with disabilities
Changes what is the official ballot, particularly for DRE machines
Limits who can assist a voter adjudicated to be incompetent by court
Repeals 3 public financing programs
Repeals disclosure requirements under Candidate Specific Communications
No more paid voter registration drives
Moves presidential primary to first the Tuesday after South Carolina

I was just reading the list the lib/dems are objecting to and some of those HB589 have been in effect for years - under the prior Demorats but maybe with different wording- but some of this makes me want to barf - "vigilante" instead of vigilant?? Vigilante is the work of them - witness the Black Panther interventions which are now listed by them as a minor nothing event.

The more I think about "vigilante" being used the madder I get. I would like to remind them that we Republican leaning voters and our conservative/Republican officials live in the New South. We have never lynched - even in the Old South - nor interfered with their Constitutional rights and the laws of this land.

NAACP Files Lawsuit Claiming Rights Were Violated Only Hours After Voter ID Law Passed

August 17, 2013 By Daniel Greenfield

North Carolina’s governor had just signed a voter ID law, bringing the act of electing officials into line with other trivial matters like buying a beer, driving a car or getting on a plane, when the NAACP had already filed a lawsuit claiming that the new law had already violated the civil rights of a convenient patsy.Scissors-32x32.png

The lawsuit claims that the voter ID law is racist because black people have more trouble getting photo IDs. Rosanell Eaton, an NAACP member, will have even more serious problems because the name on her birth certificate does not match the name on her driver’s license or her voter registration.

A sensible person would think that this is the sort of thing you’re supposed to clear up on your own. Scissors-32x32.png
