Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced Friday that she would step down to become president of the University of California system.

Napolitano plans to step down in early September, according to two administration officials. Napolitano, a former governor of Arizona who had been seen as a potential Democratic presidential candidate, will exit the political stage to run the nations largest public university system.

As homeland security chief, Napolitano has been at the front lines on a host of contentious issues, from the immigration debate to securing the nations border with Mexico to the governments response to natural disasters, including deadly tornadoes in the Midwest and Hurricane Sandy, which ravaged the Northeast last year. Napolitano played a key role in the administrations handling of the Boston Marathon bombings this year. She also has come under criticism for her role in toughening airport security procedures.

Secretary Napolitano Resigns

By THE EDITORIAL BOARD

Published: July 13, 2013

There is a fuller appraisal to be done of Janet Napolitano’s performance as homeland security secretary. But in one part of her large portfolio, immigration enforcement, her record is disheartening. Her resignation gives President Obama a chance to name a successor to reverse years of bad policy and right some terrible injustices.

Ms. Napolitano, a former Arizona governor, has always presented a moderate face on immigration, and has supported the common-sense reforms embodied, more or less, in a bill that recently passed the Senate and is now lying at the mercy of Republicans in the House. But in a parallel and disturbing show of toughness, she has also led a vast expansion of the use of state and local law-enforcement agencies to crack down on illegal immigration Scissors-32x32.png

Congressional Black Caucus recommends Sheila Jackson Lee for Homeland Security Secretary

Monday, July 29, 2013

Conservative bloggers went wild Monday when they got wind of the Congressional Black Caucus’ suggestion that President Obama pick Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston for the post of Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.

Rich Cooper, avid blogger for Security Debrief, responded to the news of the Jackson Lee recommendation in a post by saying, “Apparently, it is not a joke. For reasons that baffle any sense of reality, it is a serious gesture on the part of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) to encourage President Obama to nominate Rep. Jackson Lee as a replacement for outgoing-DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano.”

A letter dated July 25 and signed by CBC Chairwoman Rep. Marcia Fudge, an Ohio Democrat, urges President Barack Obama to consider Jackson Lee for the position formerly held by Janet Napolitano Scissors-32x32.png

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee: Worst boss in Congress?

By Alexandria Baca
abaca@dallasnews.com

Updated 1: 23 p.m. Jan. 24: Hensarling aide Sarah Rozier points out The Washington Time analysis does not take into account staffers shifting from personal offices to committee or leadership offices but who still work for the same Congress member.

This was the case when some staff left Hensarling’s personal office to work for him in his capacity as House Republican Conference chairman in 2011. Excluding 2011, Hensarling’s average staff turnover rate from 2006 to 2010 is 28 percent.

Original story: Texas Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee has a reputation as one of the toughest bosses in Congress, and a new analysis of congressional staff turnover by The Washington Times suggests why.

Each year on average, 53 percent of the Houston Democrat’s aides quit, giving her the highest turnover rate in both the House and Senate between 2001 and 2011.Scissors-32x32.png

Congressional bosses from Hell: Sheila Jackson Lee

A lot of politicians give nicknames to their aides. George W. Bush famously referred to his attorney general, Alberto Gonzalez, as “Fredo.” Mitch Daniels, then head of the Office of Management and Budget, was known as “The Blade.” Barack Obama reportedly called Larry Summers, his chief economic advisor, “Dr. Kevorkian.”

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas also hands out nicknames to the people who work for her. The Houston Democrat addressed one of her employees as “you stupid censored.gif And not just once, but “constantly,” recalls the staffer, “like, all the time.”\

Another Jackson Lee aide recounts the time her parents came to Washington to visit: “They were really excited to come to the congressional office. They’re small town people, so for them it was a huge deal. They were actually sitting in the main lobby waiting area….[Jackson Lee] came out screaming at me over a scheduling change. Called me a ‘stupid idiot. Don’t be a moron, you foolish girl’ and actually did this in front of my parents, of all things.”Scissors-32x32.png
