The headlines coming out of Afghanistan have been sobering. Violence and instability ominously persist as the deadline for withdrawal of U.S. and allied forces approaches next year.

Reasonable people have wondered what will happen to Afghanistan after the International Security Assistance Force departs in 2014. Will the blood and treasure expended there over the last decade be for naught?

Kazakhstan is determined to make sure the answer is no. Along with the rest of the nations in Central Asia, my country is methodically preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.

Despite heightened risks from ethnic clashes and cross-border terrorism and extremism, Kazakhstan is optimistic that, with help from its neighbors, it can work with Afghanistan to ensure peace and stability in that fragile nation.Scissors-32x32.png
