Senate Skips Details in Rush to Pass Immigration Bill

Byron York | May 14, 2013

Are snowboard instructors key to American immigration policy? Well, they're important enough to be specifically included in the Senate bipartisan Gang of Eight immigration reform bill.

How did that happen? The original 844-page Gang of Eight bill, released in mid-April, granted a break to certain foreigners who come to the United States to work but do not wish to settle here. The Gang -- which includes Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet from the nation's skiing capital of Colorado -- gave one of those breaks to anyone who is "a ski instructor seeking to enter the United States temporarily to perform instructing services."

That was in mid-April. A couple of weeks later, the Gang released an 867-page substitute bill filled with changes large and small. Among those changes was new language adding snowboarders to the ski-instructor clause. Scissors-32x32.png

Democrats: We can call Rubio’s bluff

By Alexander Bolton - 05/16/13 05:00 AM ET

Democrats say Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) is overplaying his hand on immigration reform and warn he could kill the bill if he tries to steer it to the right.

The angst among prominent Democrats is a sign that immigration reform has hit a rough patch and the first indication of cracks in the Senate’s Gang of Eight.

Rubio caught fellow members of the Senate’s gang off guard Tuesday when he voiced support for an amendment sponsored by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the bill’s most outspoken opponent, to dramatically strengthen the system for tracking entry and exit visas. The Sessions measure was defeated by the Judiciary Committee Scissors-32x32.png

Will Team Amnesty prevail?

While attention is focused on various Obama administration scandals, the Schumer-Rubio immigration reform legislation keeps chugging along in the Senate. What are the prospects for enacting this law, or some similar version?

I believe the Senate is likely to pass Schumer-Rubio. All or nearly all of the Senate Democrats will vote for it. That’s 55 votes or close to it.

The four Republican members of the Gang of Eight – Rubio, McCain, Graham, and Flake – can be expected to vote for their handiwork. That’s 59 votes or close to it.

Thus, only a small handful of other Republican votes will be required to invoke cloture. With big business backing amnesty so lustily, it’s likely that those votes can be found.

The Gang has said it is hoping for 70 yes votes, or thereabouts,Scissors-32x32.png

Texas Hardest Hit by Schumer-Rubio Amnesty’s Legalization of Convicted Criminals

Posted on May 21, 2013 by Center for Immigration Studies

Bill would legalize 44 percent of ICE criminal caseload in Texas

WASHINGTON, May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ – The state of Texas has by far the highest number of convicted criminals, as opposed to mere arrested immigration violators, who would be legalized by the Schumer-Rubio amnesty, S.744. In just the most recent six-month period, 3,996 convicted criminals (classified as Level 3 under ICE parlance) and immigration violators would have qualified for legalization under the proposed amnesty.

The eligibility criteria established for the amnesty are so generous that 45 percent of the criminal aliens in ICE’s recent caseload would qualify for legal status, according to the Center for Immigration Studies’ examination of ICE records. Tens of thousands of illegal immigrants with criminal convictions, and tens of thousands of aliens with arrests on top of serious immigration violations would be legalized under the provisions of the Gang of Eight bill. The proposed amnesty would significantly curtail Scissors-32x32.png
