Now that some in the media have finally been shamed into covering the Gosnell abortion trial, the only thing left for journalists is finding the right alibi for ignoring it for so long. It’s like watching an episode of “Law & Order,” complete with a horrific journalistic crime and an endless stream of media excuses.

In print, online and on TV, lefty journalists came up with excuse after excuse to say they couldn’t possibly have had a typical lefty bias. Journalists offered up racism, classism, ignorance and more as possible excuses.

CNN’s resident media critic Howard Kurtz tried the blame-conservatives approach, claiming “The conservative media didn't do much either.” Ah yes, those tens of thousands of conservative reporters and editors who work, where exactly?

Kurtz couldn’t even be honest or factually correct enough to call the victims “babies,” choosing the lefty term “fetuses,” even for living, breathing children.

CNN's legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin was just as willfully ignorant during the April 12 “Anderson Cooper 360.” Toobin knocked any conservative allegation of bias. “Well, the people making those criticisms by and large are conservatives, who are saying the liberal media is trying to protect abortion rights by not showing this horror show. I don’t buy that at all,” he claimed.

Washington Post reporter Paul Farhi raised the tough question. He gave the “conservative Media Research Center” credit (Hint: It’s where I work.) for pushing the story. Then he asked: “Could it be, as conservative bloggers have charged since shortly after the trial began March 18, that the media had taken a pass because Gosnell — who stands accused of killing seven newborn infants and one mother — is an abortion doctor whose alleged crimes run counter to the mainstream media’s supposed support for abortion rights?

He included several unsatisfying answers. ABC didn’t say. NBC tried to dodge. CBS admitted correctly that it planned to cover it. “Fox News has been the only consistent national TV source on the story,” Farhi wrote. He added that MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” would cover it on April 15 and they did.

His own paper had given multiple responses.

On April 11 at 7:08 p.m., health reporter Sarah Kliff defended her failure top cover Gosnell. “I cover policy for the Washington Post, not local crime, hence why I wrote about all the policy issues you mention,” Kliff said. Conservatives set Twitter aflame that night, making “Gosnell” a trending topic.

The Banality of Bias

Journalists are awfully liberal, Arendt they?

The New York Times has finally produced a second news story on the murder trial of Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell--almost a month after its other story, which briefly recapped the trial's first day. Like the Times's first story, which we cited in yesterday's column, this one appears deep inside the paper (on page A12). You almost get the impression the Times doesn't want to be there. More than almost: The paper's editors make it explicit with their headline: "Online Furor Draws Press to Abortion Doctor's Trial."

What an amazing headline that is. The editors of the New York Times declare that they're covering the trial under protest, yielding their news judgment to an angry online mob. It's probably the most honest thing they've ever published.

oday's New York Times story, like the one last month, refers to the infants Gosnell is accused of murdering as "fetuses," although it also refers to them as "babies." This is another fascinating slip. Abortion proponents resolutely adhere to the convention of calling unborn children "fetuses" so as to conceal the similarity between (at least late-term) abortion and infanticide. By using the terms interchangeably, the Times unwittingly defeats this pro-abortion obscurantism, revealing what it means to conceal.

Gallup shock: Just 7% following Gosnell abortion trial 'very closely'

Paul Bedard

5/10/13

The public is ignoring the sensational Philadelphia murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell, despite increased coverage by the mainstream media prompted by criticism from conservative groups, making it one of the least followed stories in Gallup poll history.

(Snip)

The Gallup poll of 1,535 conducted over five days is likely to come as a shock to conservatives who succeeded in pushing the media into covering the trial more. Gallup found that just 7 percent of the public is following the case "very closely" and 54 percent "not at all."

But Gallup, in analyzing the findings, said it couldn't determine if the public's attitude was due to the lack of media coverage of the trial or because it has really had no impact on their views of abortion.

Priest conducts Catholic service to name 45 aborted babies found in Gosnell clinic

By Jennifer Harper The Washington Times

A Catholic priest presided over a service Thursday to give proper names to the 45 babies whose bodies were found in the West Philadelphia abortion clinic of Dr. Kermit Gosnell. He is charged with killing five people - a patient and four viable babies that prosecutors say were born alive. He has also been charged with performing late-term abortions that violate Pennsylvania’s 24-week limit on the procedure.

“People have names, people deserve names. The name expresses the person. The name recognizes that there is a person there.” said Father Frank Pavone during the 30-minute service in the New York chapel of Priests for Life, the Catholic Church’s largest pro-life activist group.

“Who are these children, and whose are these children?” Father Pavone asked. “Are they medical waste or are they our brothers and sisters?” Scissors-32x32.png

I'd make a large wager Fr. Frank will be accused of politicizing this.
