A great sense of alarm is spreading among ordinary Europeans today, especially in the south and east of the continent. Now even the elitist media are giving us the worst international news since the Cold War.

Americans do not want to hear this, either.

Well, you may not be interested in evil, but evil may be interested in you.

Listen up. This could be important.

The Washington Post just told us that a dictatorial strongman has risen to power in Hungary, a man named Viktor Orban. In a two-hour parliamentary session, Orban forced radical changes in the Hungarian constitution to favor his own party. Orban caught the European media and political elites by complete surprise.Scissors-32x32.png

Aging Europe Chooses Comics over Fascists

3/5/13

Gideon Rachman argues in his latest column that despite tough times in Europe the continent is electing comedians, not fascists, to power. There’s something to the trend he’s identified: it isn’t the 1930s anymore, and we aren’t seeing the rise of thugs and genocidaires (except maybe in Greece). Rachman:

It’s also less clear that Eastern Europe will avoid the temptations of fascism. Hungary is already experimenting with letting some extremely nasty people close to power, and the Balkans generally aren’t moving toward either democracy or prosperity quite as much as one would like to see. The capacity of the EU to spread democratic values and ideas in the neighborhood or serve as a stabilizing force either to its south or west seems to have been diminished.

Greece’s Golden Dawn: “Get the Stench Out of Greece”

10/21/12

Via Meadia has been keeping a close eye on Golden Dawn, the far-right Greek political party that won its first ever seats in Parliament this year and has been growing more popular by the day. A weekend article at the Washington Post talks about why many Greeks are starting to love and rely on Golden Dawn, and why many others are scared stiff:

One consequence of this situation is the rise of Golden Dawn. A recent poll put its popularity at 22 percent across the country, a huge increase from June when it won 7 percent of the parliamentary vote. Its popularity is based on its social services, and many Greeks view the party as a go-to problem solver. But its leaders vilify glorify Hitler, and its operatives speak of “cleaning up” immigrant neighborhoods.

Bad things happen when European politics are dragged to the fascist right.

For the record fascists are not right wing. I E-mailed WRM about this, with sources cited, sad to say no rely was recieved.

Spain's central bank offers grim economic forecast

3/26/13

MADRID (AP) — Spain's central bank is predicting a continuing recession and mounting unemployment for the rest of 2013 as the country struggles to free itself from a broad European slowdown and repair its finances.

The Bank of Spain said Tuesday it expects the country's economy to shrink 1.5 percent this year, compared with 1.4 percent in 2012, and only return to growth in late 2014.

It forecast the jobless rate will rise to 27.1 percent this year, up from 26 percent last year. That also won't start falling until 2014. The country's budget deficit is expected to drop to 6 percent of its economy in 2013, down from 10 percent last year.
