Senate blocks Hagel nomination - for now

1920525USA Today:

Republicans on Thursday delayed Defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel's confirmation for at least one week citing concerns that senators have not had enough time to review his nomination. Leading GOP senators pledged to allow a vote when the chamber returns after the President's Day recess, suggesting the nomination is on pause but not in peril.

Republicans blocked Democrats from achieving the 60 vote threshold required to end debate, 58-40, and move to a final vote on the nomination. For the final confirmation vote, a simple 51-vote majority will be enough.

"I will vote in favor of cloture on the day we get back," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who defended senators' right to have more time to review a nomination that has sharply divided the two parties. McCain has said he doesn't support Hagel's nomination, but he will not block it from a final vote.Scissors-32x32.png

Report: Hagel Said State Department Controlled by Israel

Paul Mirengoff

2/13/13

In a March 2007 speech at Rutgers University, Chuck Hagel said that the U.S. Department of State was an adjunct of the Israeli foreign minister’s office, according to a contemporaneous report of the event. The contemporaneous report consists of notes by Republican political consultant and Hagel supporter George Ajjan, who wrote about the speech on his website the following day.

I originally wrote this as an add-on to Paul’s post immediately below, but thought that since it is pretty long, and goes well beyond the immediate subject of Paul’s post, it should probably be posted independently. So here it is:

Good news….Hagel nomination blocked, Brennan vote delayed.

By: Curt

Although I’m disappointed four Republicans voted for this awful nomination I’m glad they were successful in filibustering Hagel:

Senate Republicans in a 58-40 vote Thursday blocked former Sen. Chuck Hagel’s (R-Neb.) nomination as Defense secretary from proceeding to a final up-or-down vote.

Four Republicans — Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Thad Cochran (Miss.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Mike Johanns (Neb.)— joined 55 Democrats and Independents in supporting the nomination. Sixty votes were needed to cut off debate, leaving Democrats one vote short.

The final 58-40 tally reflected a no vote from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who switched his vote from yes to preserve his ability Scissors-32x32.pnghttp://floppingaces.net/2013/02/14/good-news-hagel-nomination-blocked-brennan-vote-delayed/

Breaking: Hagel filibustered — barely; Update: Rand Paul getting hammered by Ron fans for voting no

He was one vote short. Republicans Cochran, Collins, and Johanns had all already committed to voting yes so the only mystery was whether Reid could find two more GOPers to cross the aisle. He found one: As expected, Murkowski ended up erring on the side of bipartisanship. Orrin Hatch voted present, which may or may not be his way of signaling that he’ll vote for Hagel when they try this again in a few weeks but not right now. But wait — what about Rand Paul? If ever there was a SecDef nominee whom the Ron Paul paleocon fan base could sort of dig, it’s a guy known for lamenting the “Israel lobby” and opposing Iran sanctions. Result

Philip Klein, tongue in cheek, calls him today’s neocon hero. Paul’s going to catch endless crap for this from his dad’s supporters so I assume he’s a soft “no” on Hagel, not a hard “no” like Ted Cruz Scissors-32x32.png
