The Unserious Gun Control Debate

Geee

Recommended Posts

the-unserious-gun-control-debaAmerican Spectator:

Vice President Biden’s gun violence task force is reportedly going to give its recommendations to President Obama tomorrow, kicking off the next stage of the gun control debate. President Obama — aided eagerly by his media cohort — will try to convince people that this is an immediate crisis with his characteristic insistence that “we can’t wait” for Congress to pass a new “assault weapons” ban.

As the Washington Post wrote in a Saturday editorial, “The opportunity to do something serious about gun violence must not be lost.” The definition of what is “serious” — what would actually help prevent another Newtown-like school massacre — is being shaped by the left to exclude anything other than gun controls. So far, there’ no competing idea from the gun advocacy groups or Republicans who will have to fight Obama’s ideas on the floor of the House and Senate.

While Obama and the rest are busy convincing people that only they are “serious,” gun control opponents are cornering themselves by limiting their opposition to a debate over whether we have more or fewer guns in private hands and in or around schools. That’s bad politics and a strategy that will ensure defeat. They have to do better.Scissors-32x32.png

Gun Control Shootout at the DC Corral

- Daniel Greenfield (Bio and Archives) Monday, January 14, 2013

After years of languishing under the duck boots of gun owners, gun control advocates are dusting off their iPads and heading into the fray. Their renewed excitement has as much to do with the dead kids of Newtown as it does with the prospect of four years of a lame duck leftist who asserts imperial executive authority and uses the Constitution to clean up coffee spills in the Oval Office

Taking on the NRA with a gun ban, like taking on pro-Israel voters by nominating a Defense Secretary and CIA Director who prefer that Israel not exist, is part of a larger program of wiping out the political influence of the non-left. And the 2nd Amendment haters who were forced to sit at the back of the big government bus so that senators could get elected in the South are now feeling optimistic about their chances of killing another piece of the living Constitution.

The campaign is cheesily predictable. The designated victims are cutting commercials and making public appearances, led by Gabby Giffords, whose great achievement in life is being a famous woman who got shot in the head, making her the Chief of the Victims Scissors-32x32.png

Americans are suckers for a sob story. But a lot of them are also suckers for personal freedom. Whenever a bullseye is put on freedom for the greater good, two narratives battle it out for the soul of the country. “We have to fix this” and “Leave me alone.”Scissors-32x32.png

The School Shooting You Haven't Heard About

C.J. Box

January 12, 2013

Very few people heard about the school shooting in gun-filled Wyoming that left three people dead late last year. Stick around, and you'll find out why.

Here’s what happened:

Chris Krumm, a troubled 25-year-old, traveled from Connecticut to Casper, Wyoming, to settle a score with his father, Jim Krumm, a popular junior college instructor. The motivation for his actions are unclear, but Chris Krumm appeared to be suffering from a mental illness.

A video letter to Sens. Franken & Klobuchar

Scott Johnson

1/12/13

Earlier this week Stewart Mills of Mills Fleet Farm released an open video letter to Minnesota Eighth District Rep. Rick Nolan and Minnesota Senators Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar regarding gun control legislation being touted in Congress. Originally *posted here by the Brainerd (Minnesota) Dispatch, the video sets out to establish that a duck hunting shotgun is more destructive and lethal than a Huldra AR-15 modern sporting rifle. It does that and more.

The video presents an impassioned and knowledgeable host who issues a full blast of truth in an utterly compelling style. If he wanted to, Mr. Mills could easily pursue a career outside the retail business. Here Mr. Mills steps out and calls — pardon me — bullshit on the political mania of the moment.

Our friends at the Republican Party of Minnesota respectfully urge viewers: “Be sure to share on Facebook and send to friends and family.” Please watch Mr. Mills make his case. A little over 12 minutes long, this video is worth watching through to the end.

Great News!!!

N.Y. Passes Gun Control

The AP reports:

New York's Assembly on Tuesday easily passed the toughest gun control law in the nation and the first since the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, calling for a tougher assault weapons ban and provisions to try to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill who make threats.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushed hard for the bill, which passed the Senate on Monday night. He is expected to quickly sign the measure into law.

"This is a scourge on society," Cuomo said Monday night, six days after making gun control a centerpiece of his State of the State address. The bipartisan effort was fueled by the Newtown tragedy that took the lives of 20 first graders and six educators. "At what point do you say, 'No more innocent loss of life'?"

The measure, which passed the Assembly 104-43, also calls for restrictions on ammunition and the sale of guns.

Well crime will surely plummet in NY now....yes all will be sweetness & light in the Empire State!

DHS to 'Expand and Formalize Coordination' on Gun Control Efforts

MICHAEL WARREN

1/16/13

Janet Napolitano, head of the Department of Homeland Security, released a statement Wednesday saying she is "proud to support" the Obama administration's efforts to "combat gun violence in our country." Here's more from Napolitano's statement:

In the aftermath of the tragic Newtown shooting, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), together with the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the FBI have worked to identify measures that could be taken to reduce the risk of mass casualty shootings. In the coming days, DHS will expand and formalize coordination of ongoing efforts intended to prevent future mass casualty shootings, improve preparedness, and to strengthen security and resilience in schools and other potential targets. DHS will work with partners at all levels of government, to address five critical areas intended to reduce the risk of mass casualty shootings in the United States: Prevention, Protection, Response, Education, and Research/Evaluation. DHS will also work with law enforcement to refresh, expand and prioritize the implementation of nationwide public awareness efforts such as the “If You See Something, Say Something™” campaign. This is a critical issue that requires immediate attention and I look forward to supporting the President and this Administration as we move ahead.

At Least $4.5 Billion in New Spending for Gun Control

President Obama and Vice President Biden revealed their proposed reforms intended to reduce firearms related violence.

The proposal contains a mix of executive actions, regulations, and calls for Congress to act legislatively. The total package will cost at least $4.5 billion in new spending.

Oregon, Texas officials warn White House against enforcing new gun regulations

State officials in Oregon and Texas are vowing to fight back against any attempt by the federal government to impose new gun control laws.

The warnings come as President Obama on Wednesday unveiled a comprehensive plan to address gun violence, based on the recommendations from the Vice President Biden-led task force. The plan includes a call for legislation to ban assault weapons as well as a variety of executive actions.

But in Oregon, Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller wrote a letter to Biden Monday saying his department will not enforce any new gun laws it considers unconstitutional.

Right Scoop: Along the same vein, here’s an interview with a Kentucky Sheriff saying pretty much the same thing

After reading the 23 XO's from Oblunder.....it seems like another exercise in political self-gratification using taxpayers money........with children as stage props.

What does our HIPAA records have to do with gun control? How incongruous that our AG from the Department of Injustice is going to have a plan in supervising any aspect of gun control......even with their experience in killing Mexicans & Americans by selling assault weapons to Mex drug cartels.

Obama the Over-reaching Onanist.

The best argument against gun control is American history. Not at the nation’s founding. In the nation’s capitol on it’s bicentennial.

JHo

Since my rights and yours precede and trump the left’s chronic mendacity, I’m not one to argue with leftists about my right to defend myself, regardless of the nature of the threat against me.

But when I do meet the left on its terms I use Jeffrey Scott Shapiro, criminal prosecutor for the District of Columbia from 2007-09.

In the wake of the horrific elementary-school shootings in Newtown, Conn., last month, many Americans, desperate to do something in response, have decided that much stricter gun control is the answer. Democrats have proposed reinstating the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein has proposed legislation that would even restrict the use of some semiautomatic handguns.

[...]

The D.C. gun ban, enacted in 1976, prohibited anyone other than law-enforcement officers from carrying a firearm in the city. Residents were even barred from keeping guns in their homes for self-defense.

[...]

The gun ban had an unintended effect: It emboldened criminals because they knew that law-abiding District residents were unarmed and powerless to defend themselves. Violent crime increased after the law was enacted, with homicides rising to 369 in 1988, from 188 in 1976 when the ban started. By 1993, annual homicides had reached 454.Scissors-32x32.png

Since the gun ban was struck down, murders in the District have steadily gone down, from 186 in 2008 to 88 in 2012, the lowest number since the law was enacted in 1976.Scissors-32x32.png http://proteinwisdom.com/?p=46717
